is tech victory condition sorta pointless?

every time i've actually been able to achieve it, i could've achieved a cultural or military win waay the heck before; it seems it's only by actually deciding to not take those other two victories that i'm able to get a tech victory...is it just my style of play or do others have a similar experience?

It's rare when the tech win is the only choice, but once I won through tech because I had no other choice. In gigantic galaxy Drengin and Altarians were closely matched AND at peace and I was a bit ahead of them. But with their bonuses they were heading full speed toward tech victory, so I had to put 100% into research to get there ahead of them. When I got tech victory, both of them already had pre-requisites for Final Frontier, so I've beaten them to it by only few turns. I doubt I could get any other kind of win.

I believe that in 1.04, the AI can't beat you to a tech victory. If the AI researches final frontier, the game keeps going. In fact, I heard that you can even trade for final frontier to get a tech victory.

The rumor is that in a future version, a tech victory for the AI will be an option.

I've won tech on gigantic maps while being totally crushed militarywise (and thus culturally receding).

On Large or bigger maps tech victory becomes a "legit" option as it is entirely possible you will be able to reach Final Frontier long before you can wipe everyone out or achieve an alliance. As LDiCesare points out, it becomes even more viable when you're not dominating at all.

On Medium and smaller, going for tech is more of an excercise in completism as it is rare that you won't have achieved an alternative winning condition long before you can get it.

I had one win when the tech victory was the only choice, It was long and painful...turn, turn, turn

Its a win, and I'll take it, but it was no fun.

I like going for tech victory, but you're right... cultural is a lot easier. Too easy, I think. I hope tech victories count more in the Metaverse. :P

I don't think the tech victory is pointless. I like the fact that its there, in case you get caught in a quagmire situation where neither you nor the AI are going to budge. As others have correctly pointed out, they become very easy to achieve relatively speaking. Granted with the advent of 1.04, its not nearly as easy to get the tech victory this time around. But it still has its purpose.

aahhh, that explains it. i pretty much only play small/tiny maps...too difficult to remember what i was micromanaging when i resume a session the following day on any mapsize larger than medium. thanks.

One other thing. On a tiny map, I had a situation where there were three races left, and I had only three planets. The other two were at war with each other, and I had some wicked strong Battlehammers and a completely sick number of tech resources (three in a small map map, wtf? =) ). I was like, screw it, I can't beat them with my military so I'm going to tech up like crazy! I think when I finished I had something like +400% to technology, and I was waaaaay ahead of everyone else (nevermind that I couldn't actually -build- any of the ships I was researching, I still won).
