Full Minion Specc

Is it any good at all?

I just tried a match with the Vampire Lord and I tried a full on minion specc. Only getting the minion based skills plus his Mass charm. I thought it was pretty underwhelming. Was I doing something wrong? Sending my minions to attack a Demigod seemed to do little damage at all and that was even with them buffed to max. It just felt like I would have been better off playing VL like an Assassin.

To me, minions just feel like the Rook's Archer tower. Just a little extra DPS you don't have to worry about.

I have been trying these types of builds and have also been rather underwhelmed with them. I contiually am trying because I figure it must just be me not utilizing them properly, but I've yet to actually play 1 game where I felt the creep skills were more important than other skills available to a general.

Queen of Thorns has been the one I've been trying the most lately, her closed form is practically designed to be nearly 100% creep utilization with the added bonus of having her shield spell available. I've only seen 1 game where I thought the opponent utilized them great and it was an extremly aggresive early game build with multiple heros non stop pushing as fast as possible to home portals. If you aren't super aggresive with them, to me atleast, they become near useless quick.

Yeah, so far I don't see the advantage. It's like Generals are better off playing their assassin build with minion abilities as fillers.

Minions builds are slow at first, but the longer the game lasts, the stronger they become to the point your army is really a pain for anyone trying to come at you.

Minions builds are very vulnerable to AOE builds though. On the other hand, a single target assassin build is really easy prey to the minion general late game.

Don't take the minion enhancing skill line until you have your maximum army, only then it becomes very useful.

Unless I get targeted early on by assassin heroes and they make my life a pain, I'll usually end up top 3 in damage done with Oak and I'm a real beast at taking down towers and pushing into ennemy lines. I can also sometimes hold off 2-3 ennemy DGs at our citadel in defense all alone if they don't manage to kill me.

Erebus has particularly weak minoins but that kind of build is exceedingly powerful on sedna and the queen.

Sedna is the way to go for a minion build. You have to focas all of your money on minion armor and gloves. Also use your favor points for general items. You can accually get a pretty powerful army on your side with minions doing about 75-115 damage. That added up is alot of damage when focas fired ( wich is a must use strat for any minion build). You also have to practice with the controls to get used to them and to learn when to just send in your minions and not your Demigod and vice versa.

Actually, I would make the argument that Oak is the way to go for a minion build.  At least, Oak is the way to go if you want to deal damage.  I suppose Sedna has better survivability.

Firstly, the Morale stat is the same for all generals.  Sedna can have 4 Yetis iirc while Oak can have 10 spirits.  Morale adds 4 Weapon Damage to each minion.  This is +16 for Sedna, but +40 for Oak.  (Actually, 40/64 assuming they have all their generic minions as well.)  There are six levels of this, so it boils down to 240/384.  This isn't even touching on items or any of the other minion stats.

Then, you have to consider the fact that Oak has more damage-oriented abilities.  Penitance and Surge of Faith both give drastic boosts to the army through making the enemy take extra damage and allowing the Oak's minions to attack faster.

And just throwing it out there, but it is much easier to get more Spirits for Oak than it is to get more Yetis for Sedna.  If you're in a battle, Sedna is reliant on her cooldown to summon more Yetis.  On the other hand, Oak can easily plop down a Ward or two for a constantly refreshing supply of Spirits.

The biggest problem with minion builds is that they are fairly weak in the early game.  Once they get rolling and have enough minions, I've found them to be extremely powerful.  I am somewhat disappointed in the lack of minion oriented builds that are posted around here.  I think there is a lot of potential that the community is ignoring.

I guess that the main problem with minion spec is that it's actually far weaker than a general assassin specc, whoever the general is. Think about the price of a well stuffed army (gloves, idols and so...).

And to put my 2 cents, if playing a general minion spec would be effecient, I would chose Sedna without any doubt, because of her health Aura. In that case, the gameplay of a General Minion would be the same as the QoT tower destroyer specc. But btw, having a minion specc is expensive and worthless against demigods. You're not going to kill them, but you'll be able to manage farming and annoying harassing, thats all.

Minion Generals play differently than Assassin spec.

Your goal is not to kill others, it's to support others, pressure at key points and since you need less money than Assassin spec to be a nuisance, you can upgrade the Citadel for the team and let your real Assassins do their job.
