Dealing with ranged players

Alright i'm making this post mostly in the wake of about 3 games where I just got tooled up versus ranged players.

My usual band of misfits that I play is the Oak and Unclean Beast.

Generally I start out pretty good, but If I start playing versus aggressive Torchbearers or Regulus players I get screwed.  TB will do this if I'm camping a flag lane:

He'll come in, fireball me (i'll try to interrupt with a Penitence but most of the time there's some walking distance before he gets it off) he comes in and drops a circle of fire which I get out of but he mostly does it to wipe out creeps and get xp and I can't catch up to him. He's run away to a tower and my creepwave is dead, so it'd be dumb to follow. Well 5 seconds later he comes in and does the same thing again.  Fireball and Flame Circle.

At this point my health may be too low to be hanging around a tower I need to go back, do some cit upgrades/potions.

But generally their ranged tactic really keeps me at bay (Heaven forbid he gets fed and gets the Heart of Life early. When he gets that and some speed, I can't keep up and he runs while regening, then more damage /sigh). Regulus can be the worst offender however.  Either they'll drop mines which make it stupid to cross, or he'll just snipewhore and pick off me (or worse, baddie teammates which feed him)

I mean it seems like a strategy that I should be working fine against, and I get the Boots of Speed and Speed Anklet early, but I just can't follow them to their towers; i'd take too much damage.

And then late game fireball/sniping just really keeps me even mroe at bay.  It's like I've lost when the game started.

Speed upgrades or bust. You gotta have some weaknesses, right? Perhaps get a buddy who plays Erebus to gank his ass while he concentrates on shooting at you.

Also, Unclean Beast has the strongest ranged attack in the game. Use it.

The problem is your doing EXACTLY what the ranged player wants you to do.

Next time you play against a ranged player try this:

Alter your initial buy and get a potion.

The first time you see the ranged demigod move a little to far from his tower (advancing to a flag to place a circle of fire is a perfect example) attack him, chase him, right back to his towers and get a few more whacks in. Retreat, use your potion and wait for the next wave.

What you have now done is harrassed the ranged played to the point where they can no longer advance due to low health, or you forced them to head back to the crytsal, when they return, you will be a level above them and things should go downhill for them from there.

In any case there are quite a few ways for the various characters to deal with range. That was just one example. I just wanted you to realise that you are doing EXACTLY what the ranged player wants you to do and that is never a good thing.

tower damage is reduced by armor. something to consider when you pick your item upgrades.

also, since you are playing with Oak, consider the following tactic as a nasty surprise option that can get kills on unprepared ranged DGs:

keep an extra teleport scroll on you at all times. pursue ranged players well past the border of their tower range (the normal point where you would turn back and go back to the flag+creeps). just charge through and keep whacking until they're dead. penitence helps a whole lot with this. they normally wouldn't expect you to be able to follow them in so deep because you'll surely die on the way out to their towers. but you're Oak, you can bubble hearth. Put up your Shield and teleport right back to your health crystal, you don't even have to think about walking back out.

this also works as an emergecy escape if you can't get the kill and have to abort the maneuver. its still usually worth doing. you'll be back at the flag with full health and mana in a few seconds. they have to choose between running back to the flag with critically low health (you might not have killed them but you certainly whacked them around quite a bit) or running back to their health crystal just like you did.
