What's your balance between damage and defence?

I have been finding lately that I am having troubles finding a balance between damage related items and defence based. When I play something against classes like UB, TB, Regulus - where they can take a ton of HP off me very quickly, my answer is usually stacking HP through items. I find by getting as much HP as possible can really negate their nastier attacks, particularly if they're going in for a gangbang. I worry though that too much HP is reducing my own effectiveness in regards to damaging them. I don't want to be constantly soaking up damage then having to retreat while they come off better from a fight.

What is a good balance? What do you guys do when against these classes that dish out rapid hurties? I play a range of classes, from Rook to UB to Torchbearer and while the range of TB is definitely easier to stay back from say an enemy UB/Oak/Sedna/Ed, playing something like Rook/UB means you're having to get in there and dirty and if you dont have sufficient HP you're toast. Alternatively, if you have too much HP it can be very difficult to take down towers if you dont have a high enough damage output.

What kind of things do you do to counter this kind of enemy? Enemies who can spike damage - or like UB's spit, a dangerously high AOE.

It all depends on how your opponent is playing. For example, TB tends to focus on burst attacks, so I counter by boosting my max HP. On the other hand, rook tries to whittle you down with towers etc. Therefore, HP regen helps. Also, if you are a hit and run type (I'm looking at you, TB and UB), regen is better than quantity, because you should not ever stay arround long enough to actually die. The faster that HP/MP returns, the sooner you can run back in.

I don't think hp and mp regen are really worth it once you get the Heart of Life. +20 hp/second only heals 600hp in thirty seconds, which is longer than a skirmish is likely to take. Activate the heart once you step out of combat to get five times that in both hp and mp.

For now, until the Erebus nerf, I keep my mana up. Mana is Erebus' life. If he has mana, he can live. However, with the nerf, I'll probably have to invest in more HP items, since with the new mana cost being as high as it is, I won't be able to support myself with bite alone.

I usually get a Nimoth armour for my defense.  A great balance of health and armour boosts for a very reasonable price.  Remember, damage reduction from armour makes your hit points go further.  This is especially important for characters like Erebus that have life steal.

Beyond that, your equipment of choice should vary based on your character and the enemy demigods you're facing.  Racking up a lot of armour against Erebus is a very good idea, since this largely negates bite.  Hit point upgrade items are critical against the beast, since it lets you tank spit easier.  As mentioned, I think Nimoth's offers you the best bang for your buck overall if you're just looking for something to take a minimal number of inventory slots.  If you're unsure, go with Nimoth's.

As sedna, my main strengths lie in support and pounce, so I dont really bother with much offensive items, I usually stack Hp and HP/s items, along with lots of mana stuff.
