"Turbo" mode @ start of online matches

so i've noticed that any game i join online always has the game run into turbo-mode for 15 or so min,

i also noticed that whenever i i host game,  turbo-mode never occurs,

alot of people thus ask me @ start "are you settings put to fast???"

well yes,  they are,   everything put 2 fastest etc.

but it does make me wonder,  why do games i create never have this "turbo" at the start

^^^^

copied from another discussion with a buddy,  i decided to ask this here also,

does anyone experience the same as i do??  and does any1 have an idea why ??

it doesnt ruin the game,   in fact i prefer having the same speed throughout the whole of the game,

but i am just wondering why it happens ;)

I think I've noticed this sort of thing too, where some games that are set to "Quick Start" have rocket starts and some don't.  Could this be a case of the game only moving as fast as the slowest computer or some such?

I always thought it was due to host having alloy enabled vs not enabled....

Interesting thought Hack.

I have alloy enabled, and I was thinking of making a post about the very same thing as I see this quite often, but not when I host.

If it's about Alloy, then I'll work on my router because I like the faster ships etc.

Some games seem to just FLY things go so fast...I prefer this.

The reason I think it is alloy and a number of others such as How have voiced similar suspicions is because pre-1.1 it wasn't like this. Then some of us who were on back then played and were like "woahh - when did Sins get turbo charged???" But it wasn't repeatable and a number of games I hosted didn't do it (back then I was one of those special group of people that could host pre-alloy as I setup my router :) )

Could it be that if one player takes an eternity to load the game it will catch up by going to warp.

Or maybe it has to do with the host. When I host it sometimes seems we get speed ups mid game too. Old system.

Ummm it could be that the game is goign at normal pace, but slows down because there is a lot more stuff to keep track of once the game gets going.

Possible, but SP doesn't go that fast unless you go to 2x speed. Of course SP slows down heaps due to the AI mid game onwards...

interesting theory...   will try hosting a game with alloy enabled and disabled see if i get the turbo-mode with alloy on (im also one of those peopel that were able to host pre-alloy becuase i config'd my router)

If this works, I'll happily mess with the router.

What ports need to be opened?

6112 to host and 7000 for ICO I think

6000or 6001 or something like that for you to connect - look in the user.setting file (think that is the right name) - they are all listed there

6000 and 6112  (dont know anything about 7000)

and most importantly

TURN OFF UPnP

i was puzzled by the fact WHY i couldnt host,  since everything was configged right.. or so i thought

UPnP , was screwing with my router i guess...  cuase when i turned it off,  it worked.. :P

(still havent had time 2 check this out,  i will probably be doing so today,  will post the results if i managed to)

I found that when 1.1 came out I needed to open port 7000 to access ICO... Fairly sure it is in the config file...

Thanks Hack!

Shadow, what were the results of testing the "turbo mode" with the new router settings?

I'm sure it has something to do with space ponies...

End of ReadyMan's quote

sorry 4 late reply,

router = unchanged :P

ports

6000, 6112 are opened,   7000, 6001 are closed jsut like b4 (and im stil able 2 host)

i tried playing through Alloy and without alloy,  both games never had this early "turbo" @ the start,

i think it concludes Alloy does not cuase the initial "turbo" at game-start (or for me anyways..)

guess i'll just have 2 live without a turbo mode,  i'm doomed 2 explain people over n over again that my setting ARE on fast!! :P

It could be a combination of having alloy on and the host having a fast computer.

I have notice that with Alloy DISABLED that turbo mode never happens and that turbo mode was first seen when v1.1 was released, even though it wasn't in the beta's of v1.1.

Anyway, I enjoy turbo mode as it speeds up the stupidly repetitive early portions of the game.

And yes, if I am ever caught dead playing single player (usually when a thunderstorm is overhead), then I play at x2 or x4 speed.
