"Don't buy gold, this is fortress" --> ??

So, I've had two allies tell me this.  Both of them were the "I know better than you how to play the game" type.  One game I ignored the guy and bought it anyway; another I decided to try it his way and not buy it.  I lost both games, so maybe it just doesn't make a difference, or maybe I just suck too much for it to be relevant. :D

Anyway: this seems like total bunk to me; Fortress tends to take a long time and the payoff from the money upgrade is a lot better, esp. if you play defensively for a few minutes.  Does anyone have an explanation for why I shouldn't buy this upgrade as soon as we hit war rank 3 and I have some spare money?

I think the first gold upgrade is always a good investment, doesn't mean a AUTO win in the game of course. But in Fortress I think that is the most important and coupled with that the building Health Regen to make sure your defenses and fortresses can't be wittled down over the course of the game.

My experience online is very limited so I can't personally vouch for or against buying the gold upgrade. I did, however, see a previous poster do the math and the conclusion was that Rank 1 gold upgrade pays for itself after 7.5 minutes divided by the number of Demigod allies in the map. If the game lasts longer than that after the purchase, then it was money well spent. Obviously, the longer the game, the more worthwhile your investment becomes.

Actually, the math isn't quite that simple, as it fails to take into account that until it pays itself back, you'll have to make do with fewer items, and therefore may spend less time killing and more time dying/fleeing.  In other words, there is an oppurtunity cost to it.

Most games minus a rage quit usually do last for at LEAST 15 minutes.

The first gold upgrade is pretty well a must-get.  It's absolutely phenominal and if you can't afford it because you're being pushed too hard chances are you're going to lose anyways.  After that, they're usually not worth it.

Make that "After that, they're definitely not worth it."  They're not cumulative - the second and third upgrade only give a 2 GPM bonus.  Given that they're aquired later in the game, and cost considerably more, your odds of making back your investment are slim at best.  If you're really that desperate to waste gold, you'd be far better off buying an item for a teammate and dropping it in front of them.

Not necessarily a waste.

only two conditions make the second and third gold upgrades worthwhile. the first condition is a 5 player game. the second condition is a game with the gold rate set to fast, this makes the time between gold ticks speed up. yep, it will give gold more often than once per second on fast setting. makes those upgrades worth alot more.

generally though the first one is great, the other ones are a waste.

regarding whether or not playing Fortress mode makes a difference...i'd say it depends

if you're on a small fortress map that has easily accessible forts than its probably not worth it and you should just rush the fort. buy Idols (if a general) or just health potions so you can whack at the forts for longer periods of time.

if its a large map with forts way in the back, its almost as if you're playing conquest (just with fewer flags on the map), so yeah, i'd say gold upgrade is very important for that type of map.

Certain builds in fortress on certain maps can push fast enough to make getting the gold upgrade a poor investment, but unless you are trying to do this on purpose, you should get gold.

I agree 100% on the 1st gold upgrade, but even that depends on map... I personally wouldn't upgrade further than lev 1, but it all depends on who you are up against.

I think any game you play, you will need to have gold upgrade. Whoever told you that you didnt need it he is a noob himself/.
