Check the AGP Graphics Aperature Size

GalCiv was constantly freezing on my computer until I went into the BIOS to check my AGP Graphics Aperature Size. I had recently bought a Nvidia Ti4200 with 128 megs of RAM but forgot to change the Aperature Size in my BIOS. It was set to 32 megs but I changed it to 128 megs and now the game hasn't froze since then. I thought I might pass this along for the purpose of helping people with the same problem. It worked for me.

I had a problem like that once, it's likely an incompatability between your MB and Video Card. The same thing helped me a few years back except I had to do the opposite (I had to go from 64MB to 8MB I believe). When I upgraded my MB / Processor the problem went away.

I just wanted to let people know that I'm not sure it's a "GalCiv" problem but maybe just a problem unique to your setup. It's still worth a try for people who are having problems.

BTW, what did you mean by "forgot to change the aperture size"? I'm not sure it's required when updating the video card. All it is is how much RAM can be allocated to your video card from your system RAM (it doesn't mean that it will all be used).

Thanks for the explanation regarding the AGP Aperture Size, I was obviously mistaken in my understanding of its definition. My MB manual is sparse on its information and I've only just recently started to seriously poke around in the BIOS in computers. I have no complaints regarding the game itself but offered my advice as to what worked for me. Yes my MB is somewhat old with an AMD Athlon 1.4 GHz and 256 megs of RAM. I will probably replace the MB and processor at the end of the year.
