Culture and Diplomacy

So, you can get and give cultural influence with diplomacy...but what happens to the cultural influence points after being traded?

Are they divided up in every sector you own? Every sector on the board? Every sector the AI you got it from has points in?

BTW, thanks for your help guys in answering all my questions. :)

It goes into your Influence 'pool'. This pool is 'spent' when voting on an UP Issue.

Your planet's Influence contributes to the Influence 'pool' as well (every turn I believe but I'm not sure on this), but the 'pool' doesn't affect your chances of flipping planets, it just gives you more clout in the UP. And of course you can trade your 'pool' to aliens to sweeten diplomacy deals.

Regarding influence and voting, should the minors really be producing any? Only the majors get to show up, after all.

perhaps they can do behind the scenes stuff, like how the un security council members can have votes influenced by non member nations if they exert pressure.

You can trade with the minor civs to get their influence votes. My sense is that with the latest version it is easier to trade influence points. If a UP vote is coming up and you need a good bloc of votes, see if you can trade with any major or minor civ for extra votes.

Is there really much point in going after inlfuence votes? Since you don't know what issue is going to come up for a vote, and it could be something pointless or of minor value to you, let alone something you are already in the majority on...

Sometimes its a very good thing to have those votes, especially if you get one of those issues with a 50% influence bonus, penalizing another power, voting to receive a newly formed planet, etc

Am I the only one who trades away all my influence points in the early game? I figure that my individual votes wouldn't figure much in the early game, coupled with the fact that I can't see what others are voting for.

Very early in the game, I do trade them for cash or techs, but never later than two or three years into the game... Once I have more than two major races in the diplomacy screen is usually about when I stop.

Regard it as a speculative investment. Sometimes you blow your money on a trivial issue and sometimes, as forceinfinity mentions, you hit the jackpot on a major issue. Bit like having a blind portfolio of shares, some go down and some go up, hopefully more up than down so you gain overall. :)

Peter hit the nail on the head there. I hit the jackpot once when the "a new planet has formed" issue. This occured on a tiny map, and something like this was HUGE since as we all know, planets are at a premium on that map. I had just enough to pull it out, since everyone was voting for themselves. That extra little edge made the difference for me.
