The Rook: Towers are for sissies - Strategy Guide

The Rook: Towers are for sissies - Strategy Guide

Foreword: This guide is strictly for people with good computers, reflexes and tactics. This is not for new players! Camera changing, retreating and re-engaging are critical to this build.

This is a strictly hero-killer build. It is -very- offensive. Keep that in mind. And don't knock the build without providing details on why it sucks because I've tested this build -many- times and I do very well with it.

Level 1: Hammer Slam I

*Level 2: Archer Tower

*Level 3: Structural Transfer I

Level 4: Hammer Slam II

Level 5: Boulder Roll I

Level 6: Tower of Light

Level 7: Hammer Slam III

Level 8: Trebuchet

Level 9: Structural Transfer II

Level 10: Hammer Slam IV

Level 11: Boulder Roll II

Level 12: Structural Transfer III

Level 13: Save Skill Point

Level 14: Save Skill Point

Level 15: Dizzying Force (Hammer Slam V), Poisoned Arrows and Boulder Roll III

Level 16: Structural Transfer IV

Level 17: Energizer (Structural Transfer V)

Level 18: Enhanced Attributes I

Level 19: Enhanced Attributes II

Level 20: Enhanced Attributes III

*Picking at Level 2 is situational. If I have an open lane with no opposing Demigod I'll get Structural Transfer and start pushing the tower, otherwise I go with Arrows.

Favor Items I Use:
Blood of The Fallen *

Swift Anklet *

Saam-el's Cloak ? - only against Demigods with lots of slow abilities (Regulus & Unclean)

Staff Of Renewal ? - I can't imagine being able to Hammer Slam every 8 seconds and Boulder every ~12 seconds.

Where * means I have used them and they work good and ? means I've never used them (not enough Favor) but I think they could be good.

Items: (Bought in this order)
Unbreakable Boots

Plenor Battlecrown

Nimoth Chest Armor

Journeyman Treads

Boots of Speed

Wand of Speed

Groeffling Warplate

Heart of Life

I usually also carry Universal Gadgets, Teleport Scrolls and Capture locks.

Late game I've never needed to buy any Artifacts but Bulwark of the Ages sounds like a good fit, that or the Allfathers Ring.

As far as gameplay, Hammer Slam the very first creep wave and avoid fighting Demigods until you get level 5. Once level 5 get enough mana to Boulder/Slam and wait for the right opportunity.

Boulder/Slam combos the rest of the game.

Possible Teamups:

Unclean: Rook leads stun with Boulder and Unclean uses Foul Grasp to hold them in place for a Hammer slam.

Oak: Rook Boulder Rolls and starts his Hammer and JUST AS ITS ABOUT TO HIT Oak uses Pentinence because Pentinence INTERUPTS THE BOULDER ROLL STUN AND THEY CAN MOVE AFTERWARDS.

Vampire: Rook leads stun with Boulder and Vampire Mass Charm stuns to hold them in place for a Hammer slam. This works well if melee characters are grouping up as you can slam multiple enemies.

I don't see a point in buying speed items with rook considering every demigod is ALWAYS going to be faster than you. Waste of gold/favor imo.

most people with faster demigods dont get move speed items

so if rook gets them it balances out so there not all faster then him

The order of skills you take and the items you buy is very weird/bad.

His skill order is fine, just becaus its not yours doesn't mean its automatically bad the only differences in mine are that I put points into god strength and only get structural to level 1.

His items though I do not get speed items at all.

I don't usually get speed items, instead I just work on making the Rook way tougher then usual and ripping down the enemy base and taking out any demigods that may try to stop me.

Yeah, Those item purchases are waaaay too poor.

However, I think the idea that a tower focus is not needed is completely valid.  However, that said, i don't think you need that many points in structural transfer.  It just doesn't scale particularly well.  As health goes, the % of your total decreases very quickly.  For damage, it quickly falls behind just normal attacks.

Also, level 1 Hammer Slam does very little.  Everyone can avoid it, and the damage isn't even that impressive.  That's why I go:

Tower

Archery

Hammer Slam

Hammer Slam

Boulder Roll

Sometimes getting Archery Tower later, and getting Transfer earlier, game depending.  You get the most early game strength (Level 1 to 3) and Then come straight out the gate with Roll/Slam at level 5.

I just use level 1 hammer slam for creep farming till I get higher level.

At first +speed sounded great to me on such a slow hero, but as I've played around with it i've found that it really doesn't make that much of a difference on a hammer build. I'm either in range of being able to boulder/hammer or i'm not. Theres not really a grey area, and if they see me coming they are gonna stop my combo anyway.

I'd much rather stack up some Hp to tank around and let my team help me get kills, or wreck anyone that gets too close while I pressure a lane.

10.8 speed is always nice. Of course it's temporary due to boots + WoS, but it allows to escape from troublesome situations in a jiffy.

I play a build very similar to this, with god's strength over stats, and sometimes 1 point in towers for TP. I tend to avoid more than a point or two in Structural Transfer as well. It's very effective, and allows me to mop up tower rooks quite easily. How ironic.

As for speed items, Journeys are a godsend. With enemy creeps attacking you, they proc pretty much every fight and enable easy escape/chasing. Teleport items, however, are just as effective.

I'd say the item choices are bad too except you need speed to chase people.  You don't have to be in melee range, but you do have to be fast enough for your arrows and tower to be in range, those usually finish people off.  Plus, it is hilarious to see a speed rook roaming around, and scary to see one chasing you.

I at least have boots of speed with my ninja rook build, I hardly ever get Journeyman trends though.

Speed rook is so annoying, I play my UB without speed items relying on passive skills for speed, and a speed rook would just roll and slam me and as I ran would simply outrun me and finish me off.  It made me buy WoS just to keep up.

Thats actually a good point Xeno. The speed is for the Rooks auto-firing attacks to eat away at an enemy you chase down after a successful hammer slam and bolder roll attack if that doesn't kill them outright.
