New to game - question about playing in multiplayer

I just got the game yesterday - played a few single player games, a tournament, and wanted to play online. However, when I go to custom games, none show up, and if I go to skirmish, it hangs forever looking for a game to join (not hangs as in freezes, just sits there until I cancel). What am I missing - how do I find multiplayer games?

 

Totally offtopic: What's a decent demigod for a new player? I liked Reg and Oak in single player, and found Sedna very difficult to play with. I like the idea of QoT, but felt ineffectual with her (I know this is in the wrong forum, but if anyone wants to answer the above and throw something for this, that'd be great).

There are a few issues with the recent patches. You should be able to connect fine now in theory but it isn't working as well as expected. Try forwarding some ports. This game is about hit and run and not dieing as much as possible, specially in the begining. Oak and reg are both beast end game, but kind of squishy at the begining. Sedna is pretty much unkillable without two people on her with at least one interrrupt. She also does pretty awesome 1v1 once she gets 1k dmg pounce, and a passive regen of 100+ ~_~.
