Forum Update - June 2, 2009

Hello everyone!

I just pushed an update to the forums with some heavy performance improvements done to the backend by our database engineer.  A lot of things were changed, so I don't expect this update to be perfect.  Please take a look around, and if you notice any problems or any areas that could use another performance boost, let me know here!

There were also other, minor changes made to the design and back-end structure of the forums.  Most of these are miniscule, so I won't bother to list them, but anything that seems off or wrong is definitely a bug, so be sure to let me know here or via PM!

Yeah - same issue as I was reporting - Reply 108 is end of page

The issue with changed avatars not immediately updating across all the forums predates this performance update.  Eventually, they update all around.  Probably the cache business Bara mentioned.

ARG! Pages keep taking forever to load and then only displaying pinned posts.

Me too.

Dunno if it's the same thing I have but pages tend to not load/load veeeeeeeery slowly sometimes.

I link directly from my favorites to the "my replies" page, which works fine, but it doesn't contain pinned posts.

"mark all topics as read" is broken again :)

I don't know if this is the right place to put it, or if anyone else has this problem, but I can't see the discriptions for my karma. For some reason they are cut off. I'm using IE8, and I know that this problem was occuring before the update. Here's a screenshot:

Looks like IE8 is ignoring the overflow:hidden attribute. Hopefully an easy fix, but can't really say until Bara gets back next week.

Looks fine on my end, with IE8 too. Maybe it's a forum skin thing? As i visit these forums via the demigod site.

Well looking at it again on my end the other column gets truncated:

Karma column truncated

hmm... yeah, it seems to be a problem with the Sins of a Solar Empire forums specifically. I looked on the Demigod and Elemental forums, and my karma displays fine.

EDIT: Scratch that. I was looking at other people's karma from the Elemental forums, and I ran into the same problem.

this has been around for a bit before the updates, i just didnt know where to post, but when you edit a thread of yours, and it asks the reason for editing, the field where you type is very small and the text is microscopic (not exaggerating)

its not a problem, per say, but surely something easy to fix

On the karma trunc issue, I have seen both cases happen (different columns truncated), can't really tell whose karma I was watching, but it should be easily fixable. Probably the code just needs a bit of conistency, coding every column the same, and then just add a word wrap or truncate for whichever column the forum creator prevers.

As was said earlier, I have not been able to read the modding thread either.  For the past day and a half, I have been able to get on once, whereas the standard forum is fine and the strategy works rarely, but rarely is still better than 1%...

In addition, on said forums, I have only been able to see the pinned posts and they have taken forever to load.  Something is up, and hopefully it can be quickly resolved...

it appears that te forums are having the usual( and VERY ANNOYING) play around when there is no one in the office. I also have been having a LACK of access to the sins modding forum for the last day and a half. I think that stardock should sack the weeble and obtain some Quality Control cats to eat the code pigeons that  muckup.

I agree. I can't get to any of the Sins forums... Bring in the cats!

why stop with normal cats?  Bring in the genetically-modified-super-pigeon-devouring cats.

volt would you argue with a 400 kilo cat?

Yes.  It wouldn't be able to go anywhere except the morgue.  I've seen some fat cats and I once saw a 30 pounder that practically melted when it laid down so 400 kilos would just be a pile of blubber...

a 400 kilo cat aproximatly 6 metres long?

If it is supposed to be that big then no.  I'm not arguing with something bigger than a liger...

I'm still seeing very long page load times in FF3, up to 6-8 seconds, especially on initial load of MyReplies.  Load times are similar on two different machines so I don't think it's local.  It was definitely faster before performance was 'improved' ;) .
