race modding questions

alright I've looked through the folders, and looked at the stickied custom planets tutorial, but my question is this.  Since I've found my custom race in the my documents folder, will the game still know the changes I've made.  I usually attempt to back it up instead of changing the orginal file itself, but I can't do anything with out changing the file extension from .racconfigurationxml, to just .xml.  when I make that change I can't find how to change it back to .raceconfigurationxml.

Do I need to do this or is it safe to leave it as a .xml file?

Blame Micro$oft for their default settings.

In the explorer, goto 'Tools', 'Folder Options', 'View' tab, uncheck the 'Hide exptensions for known file types'

Then hit 'OK' and find that file and rename it back.

For further edits, you don't have to rename the file. Just open Notepad, and drag the file onto Notepad to open it there. (That is if you want to use Notepad anyhow)

Copy the original file to a different folder, then mod the original.

If things don't work out, copy the backed-up file to the original location to overwrite the botched attempt to restore things to the original configuration.

Simple.

To rename a file you simply right-click on the file and choose 'Rename'.

Strange.

I posted to this thread, as did at least one other. Yet there seems to be only the OP's OP.

Is it a bug with the 'new forum program'?

I come back in an hour, only to find the original post with no replies. Then I respond and suddenly the posts re-appear.

The one on my game is just xml. If it says "raceconfigurationxml", and the game still works, something wierd is going on.

In Win 2000 and XP the folder viewing window is ran by 'Explorer.exe'. I always have the 'Windows Task Manager' thing opened and minimized (hit Ctrl+Alt+Del to open it). I honestly don't know what everyone else calls it. To open the 'Explorer' folder/file viewing window, just press Windows+E. I would imagine it's the same for Vista, but I don't have Vista, so... *shrug*.

The extensions on the custom race files under My Docs\My Games have been changed a few times over the years to avoid conflicts with older verions' files. Raceconfigxml is the one used by the current version of TA, AFAIK.
