Bing vs. Google: First impressions

Bing vs. Google: First impressions

So Microsoft has relaunched and rebranded Live Search as “Bing”.

First impressions:

Layout:

image

Like most things Microsoft makes, Bing has too much unnecessary junk on it.  The background idea is clever but distracting.

I also don’t like the layout changing when you go to one of the categories. If the categories are on the left side, keep them there.

Basic Search

image

Again, Microsoft’s stuff always feels like it had to get approval by 50 committees. Why does MSN need a link? Why does Windows Live need a link? Why is there a “Web” image in the top corner?  Ah because that shows what I’m currently viewing. But on Chrome it looks weird.

How does Google do?

image

By default, it’s much cleaner.  If I want more, I can click on “Show options”

The quality of the search is hard to judge.

On the one hand, Microsoft has put in more effort into finding people on Facebook and other engines.  But the overall quality of Google’s searches seem better or at least have more depth.

I’m going to call it a tie though because it’s close enough that it’s purely subjective.  Live Search was clearly inferior but Microsoft seems to have really upped their game.

Verdict: Tie.

#2: Questions!

One of the things I wish search engines were better at is answering questions. They are getting better and Bing seems to be quite good at it:

and one more:

Verdict: Bing (by quite a bit)

In test after test, Bing was significantly better at handling questions and getting quick answers to facts.

Verdict: Tie.

This is a tough one because Bing’s image gallery is just much better to use in most respects but the Google image gallery is vastly larger.  Google’s use of drop downs is nice but the screen space used is crazy and the options limited.

#4 Videos

image

Verdict: Oh this isn’t even close. Bing blows Google away here.

First, Bing lets you  mouse over videos and they play right in the search. Very impressive tech.  Second, it gets much more on screen. Third, Google now uses half the space to spam users with irrelevant junk.  Which surprises me because Google has YouTube to back it up.

#5 Shopping

Verdict: Tie. They both do a great job here. I wish I could combine the two. The Bing cashback feature sounds interesting though.

#6 Finding locations

Verdict: Google by a mile

Other

News: Google by a mile

Efficiency:

Certain search items are categorized and give additional information which is very interesting.

If Google has something like this, I’m not aware of it.

Overall

Overall I am leaning towards Bing which I am surprised. I had a bit of a bias going in because let’s face it, Live Search wasn’t that great. I remember in the early says of Live Search I would type in Stardock and it would bring up some magazine review of WindowBlinds on ZDNet or something.  But it’s come a long way and Bing is very close to being pretty ideal.

Microsoft still needs to get rid of some of the pointless clutter and they need to index a lot more. The news section on it is pretty basic and it copies Google so unapologetically that I feel a little dirty for using it.  Windows may borrow concepts from the Mac but Bing is basically Google done as a web 2.0 project.

The real winner is all of us.  I like Google a lot (I use Google Chrome) but I wouldn’t want them to be the only game in town.  Bing is a worthy competitor and I find myself in the odd position of having Bing be my default browser for Google Chrome. How backwards is that?

hm? this post shows some whole new parts of google to me. browsing from good OLD (so it seems) Germany, I don't have the link "show options" or even this strange "wonder wheel". but on the other hand I get 110000 more hits when I search for "Stardock". Anyway, Bing only delivers 1/5 of google's results and the Stardock main page is only rank 5, so until Bing gets better bots to stay up-to-date, I think I'll have to stay with google. Besides, may main email address is gmail and there's no way I'll switch to hotmail

You pointed to the embedded video player in Google video and marked it as annoying but you like Bing's video player on hover? Isn't that just a different implementation of the same thing?

I like being able to play a video on the right-hand side while I keep searching for similar videos. Sometimes, you may not know if this is the video you want until it's 4 or 5 minutes in. When you realize you are looking for a different one, it's nice to have some other options identified. It also reduces the need to open multiple tabs or windows and is completely intuitive.

I won't be using bing for anything other than image search since most of its nice features don't work for australia and it keeps changing my setting to aus when i visit.

and I am an expert googler... cant let all the skills picked up while studying go to waste

I'd honestly say that microsoft is rolling out some interesting tech... The bing maps system is much more interesting to me than Google Earth, in browser (using IE) 3d navigation...  Also, they've got their own SketchUp style modeler called 3DVIA made by Dassault Systemes.  It's beta and there are a few things it doesn't do very well, but it was almost easier to pick up and understand than SketchUp.  So far, for being in it's infancy, Bing is looking pretty good.  Add in the Project Natal stuff and I'm thinking that microsoft might actually be moving in a good direction (also, I like Vista :P)

Anyone good with computer know anything microsoft is more than likely be buggy and full of holes.

To be honest, I like Google, cause it clean and simple, just looking at the pictures, I won't why people dump Yahoo as their search engine, if I want pictures when I search, I could simply use Ask, even that is better then M$.

As for image search, I avoid it all together, I mean, they don't search the content of the image, but rather the "<img src"">" of all pictures of the web.

and dae, I have to disagree with the general good direction, Windows 7 is a good direction, xp was great, vista is somewhere near ME.

Mooster, I have no idea why you would say that vista was somewhere near ME... the lifecycle?  And anyone who knows anything about computers knows that every piece of software has it's flaws... EVERY piece of software.  Google's is that I know a person that works for them :P

But, whatever everyone is entitled to their opinion.  I think they're headed in a great direction, Vista x64 is actually the most stable version of the windows operating system I've run :D

Vista is Win 7 Beta and MS should treat people that purchased Vista with that in mind when it comes to upgrade pricing.
