Oak switched up

I know there have been loads of threads on Oaks Shield + HoL insanity, but I write this as a change from nerfing either shield or the HoL item and instead take Oak's other abilities into consideration.

To start, this is my first post and I am glad to be a part of this wonderful community and game!  Been playing straight for 2 days haha!

Ok, so Oak is my DG of choice if he is not yet selected on my team, and I agree this combo in insane from only 2 days playing.  I died once my first game when I was outflanked after my shield wore off (kudos to wonderful strategic play hehe), and our team even ended up losing! But when I look at Oak or read his bio, I see he is considered an immortal warrior and one hell of a general.  So how about we nerf Oaks "assassin" abilities, i.e Penitence and Surge of Life.

Oak should be a SUPPORT and DEFENSIVE character.  He should be VERY hard to kill in my mind, but he should be one of the, if not the worst offensive character.  Cut the damage given by Penitence and Surge of Life by half, while increasing their buff/debuff.  Also, decrease Oak's own auto attack damage, while increasing his spirits.

I believe this would help put the General Builds of Oak on at least even ground with the Assassin builds, well because Oak is a GENERAL!  The shield and HoL combo would only help Oak survive, but he would not be a powerhouse in a 1v1 situation.  Pairing an assassin with Oak though should be a pretty brutal combo.  I know there are a lot of other holes to be filled, but hey I never said I was a developer :grin: , just an observant player.

I write this to show a different perspective of Oak, and trying to emphasize his role as a general rather than always building him as an assassin, which the majority of Oak players do.  The same can be said for Sedna and her role as a "general" lol. Those yetis need some loving. Please give me some feedback on what you think, in the meantime I'm happy to be a part of Demigod and hope to see some of you on the field of battle!

Penitence does 200-400-600-800 damage with a low/moderate 7s debuff and (imho most important) an interrupt

Surge of Faith does 300-450-600 damage with a moderate area buff.

They are already some of the lowest damage skills any DG has.  All other direct and AOE damage skills do more than these two in the damage department.  When I look at these two I already see first and foremost 2 support skills.

Heart of Life is very strong on any setup though.  It most definitely needs to be reviewed.

The problem with minnions is that by end game you can't scale them as well as an DG.  If you start investing into buffing them your DG is gonna last all 2 seconds against DG that buffed self.  Plus AOE is so plentiful that by end game minnion's liefspan is pretty short.  So you have no choice, it's either buff self and become a killing machine or die (and yeah I know how much of a killing machine oak can become).  The thing is, most of his damage does not come from his skills, most of his damage comes from his autoattack.  It's pretty easy to push Oak above 600dps.  My usual setup (no HoL) costs just above 20k gold and gives me around 700 base dps at level 20.  Add almost 40% increase from the buffs/debuffs and you're looking at almost 1k dps auto attack oak.  It's definitely not the damage from Penitence and Surge of Faith that makes him a killer.

Oak is just overpowered, his attack and movement speed are too fast and if anyone tries to use a skill he just interrupts or makes himself invincible = bullshit

Oak attack speed and movement speed are actually quite mediocre compared to other DG, better than some, worse than others.  He also lacks any direct passive buffs in those areas.  Shield is on a pretty long timer.  I agree that penitence is a very good interrupt

Big problem when starting with Demigod is that players don't realise how one-sided the game can quickly become.  The same problem existed in dota.  Basically a common scenario is this - a newcomer usually doesn't care about duying to much and is ready to rush the opponent at any chance.  Sometimes he manages to get a kill but more often is just killed himself or forced to retreat.  An experinced player cherishes persistance more than anything else, he will patiently hold his lane and pursue his goals.  Pretty soon the experienced player will be so much ahead of the inexperienced one in both items and levels that the he will start to look overpowered.  Happened to me on both sides with pretty much any DG.  There is a big difference between overpowered and uber buffed with items (especially when you're not).

Oh and btw I just realised that Oak has the second lowest base dps of all demigods at level 20 (no skills included, hence base)

Qot = 271 dps
Oak = 290 dps
Sedna = 291 dps
Erebus = 291 dps

TB = 292 dps
Regulus = 292 dps
UB = 302 dps
Rook = 327 dps

no, he isn't.

no, they aren't.

many demigods can interupt and his invincibility just last for a few seconds and has a very long cooldown, you have to use this to your advantage.

Oak should be a SUPPORT and DEFENSIVE character.
End of quote
Why is that? Some people thinks that generals should have a ridiculous attack and hide each time they see an assassin. Maybe the name 'general' is not the best to describe them but there is no reason for them to be support characters.

Wow... Oak has low dps?  Are you crazy?  He has the highest.  I have a crit build with oak that hits harder than reg.  Souls+Power+crit items = 12K crits at lvl 8.  Its not very nice....  Hard to pull off, but if your team is willing to gut it out, scary.  Add a little tb fire aura and it just gets stupid.

Only thing I agree with is that very early (lvl 1-3) oak can outright kill certain DGs on large maps.

LOL, you wish you could hit 12k crits at level 8. That is an outrageous claim, don't even try to back it up.

Also, Oak sucks early game so that is also outrageous. Only way you could get this is if you played single player only against easy AI with starting gold set to filthy rich.

Actually, All Father's Ring, Ashkandor, Deathbringer, Duelist's Cuirass, Mage Slayer, Slayer's Wraps, Totem of War, Unmaker, Warlord's Punisher = 638 max damage for Oak at level 8.  +100 damage from Soul Power, +20% damage from Unmaker, +13% damage from Penitence, add armor reduction from Ground Spikes and Bite and I'm sure you can get a 1k hit at level 8.  Then all Crits proc at the same time for x12 (1,5 x 2 x 4) damage and whoala 12K damage... See, see you suck... you have no idea what is possible :-"

P.S. Just to save you a trip to http://www.demigoddb.com/, the total cost of the items is 94.550 gold!  I'll leave to someone else to calculate the chance of all crits proccing at the same time... :D

P.P.S. Oh darn, forgot Bracelet of Rage...you can probably push close to 20K damage at level 8 with it

P.P.P.S. Off course, neither the chance of this happening nor the damage are explicitly tied to Oak but whatever...
