In multiplayer (haven't checked single player) the favor items are not persistent anymore. IE When I buy one it is gone the next time I load a multiplayer game. All the favor points I used to buy it are gone as well. What is the point of this system if it takes 3+ network games just to buy a low-mid favor item?

When you say 'All the favor points I used to buy are gone as well.' Not sure what you mean there. My experience: Buy an item using Favor Points, game ends and I accrue more points. Next game, all Favor Points have been restored (including the ones I got last game) and no Favor Items have been bought.
In my opinion: THIS IS FREAKING AWESOME!!!!!
Now you can buy something one game and next game you have all your Favor Points back and can get something different next game.
I mean exactly what I typed. All the favor points I used to buy the item are gone (they do not come back). So I had just enought to buy the swift anklet, play the game, start a new game, not only do I not have the anklet, but I don't have the favor points to buy it again. I did get awarded favor points for playing, but was not returned the points that I used to buy the anklet. This is new since the latest patch. We are playing LAN games (which I would assume wouldn't matter).
Ok, in online games (not LAN games) the Favor Points are working as I described in my post. Since you're playing LAN games it's going to be different and DEFINITELY not working as it should.
One thing you guys could do is play online but create a Custom Game with a password so only you guys can join. That way your Favor Points will work as I described.
My question is whether it's intentionally not spending points/saving bought items, or whether that's a bug. If it's intentional, I like it, but if they reset them last patch and then turn around and fix this to the way it used to be, that will be pretty annoying.
At least you're actually accruing your favor points. The other night me and a friend played a few games together, got all my favor points. Last night, same thing, but I didn't accrue any points while my friend did for some reason.
I also have this problem.
I´d played the last 5 games for free, because non of my favor-points are saved for this games 
The patch this morning didn´t resolve the problem
I played 4 matches with a sum of 612 points in online-matches and don´t get any points. It is depressing. Because in single and multiplayer I have all Items and round about 19k points left, but in online-play I only have 2 Items and 55 points rofl!
Which mode are you playing in online (Skirmish, Custom, etc)? Also, how long are your games lasting?
I test the mode Custom-Games (in online mode) and play 2 games vs. computer and 2 games vs. a friend of mine. The games were lasting around 40 min - 90 min.
My favor item is missing as well after buying it about a month ago. Im assuming that one of the patches gave some people a weird bug in which their item is gone.
Hm, curious... in the 4 games yesterday, I got points after my first 3 matches, the 4th match is again pointless...
I don´t know, whats going on... I hope, they will fix it with the next patch :()

I´ve contacted Stardock. They fixed the 3 games which are N/A and gave me no points after reinstalling the game.
I hope, there are no further failures lake that. Its annoying.
