Colony Ships, again

Newbie question here.
Once the colony ship is built and it's sitting in orbit, I d-click on the icon and see the screen showing colonists loading. Is the number under the slider bar the number of colonists already loaded? Also, why does the ship panel always show 0 million on board?
One more, does everyone normally use auto-launch?

In my games, the slider originally always shows half of the population of the planet on the ship. If you are going to crash-create a number of colony ships by borrowing, you may want to decrease this number to avoid reducing your original planet to 100 people!
