GPU Temperature constantly rising

Any ideas to prevent this?

Hi,

I just tried my new and shiny Demigod yesterday (Single Player first, to get familiar with the possibilities) but was not able to complete one single game as my laptop (Dell XPS 1710) just shuts itself down after 5-10 minutes due to to high GPU Temperatures.

I played Demigod in windowed mode for a while to check Speedfan while playing, and I can at least say that :

1. My system shuts itself down after the GPU reached a temperature of 105°C

2. The temperature is idling at 60-75°C if I'm not playing or in the main menu/start game screen of Demigod.

3. The temperature starts to increase rapidly as soon as I'm in game (e.g. seeing the map) to about 95-100°C and continuously increases at a slower pace until it reaches 105°C (where the automatic shutdown takes place).

I've tried different things like turning fog of war on/off (you never know, right..?) and playing around with the various options I have available on the Graphics tab. Just to reassure you: The game runs very smooth and without lag/hick-ups regardless of low, medium or high graphic settings - the only thing that buggers me is this very unusual increase in GPU temperature (which I honestly have not experienced with another game on this laptop so far).

The graphics card in this laptop is a NVidia Geforce Go 7950 GTX and the operating system I'm using is Windows XP - I'm also using a "notebook cooler plate" which lowers the overall temperature the laptop is running on... (I even tried to use an electric fan on my laptop with the result that the whole laptop case was rather cold, which sadly still did not stop the GPU to reach these ridiculous high temperatures [it bought me one or two additional minutes of game time, though])

As said, the game runs without problems, except for my GPU overheating :(

So, to my question: Is there any way I can prevent my GPU from overheating? Changing the cooling is not really an option (it is a laptop). I already tried rivatuner (as suggested in another thread in this forum) but this didn't help (as the fans were not detected by this tool - Speedfan is also not able to locate my laptop fans, so I guess I cannot access these). Are there any options I should/can activate/deactivate to lower the stress Demigod puts on my GPU? Or even otherwise prevent my GPU from reaching these levels of temperature?

Many thanks in advance!

yo,

the 7950 GT chips are known to get "hot" under stress !  My 7950 GT was doing a good job on DG but also got tooooo hot, which didnt appear in other games. Meanwhile ive changed my GFX, but in ur case u cant.

...but what u can prolly do is cleaning ur cooler element of ur graphics card. Mine was dusty and after cleaning it i reduced temp. by over 10 degrees C.

RivaTuner would help if u could "underclock" ur GPU.

hope u can fix it....greets da micro

Hi,

The drivers did not help, sadly.

I've not have the time until now to do a thorough cleaning of my laptop's interior, but I will consider to do it soon - But thanks for your idea with underclocking the GPU! When I'm clocking my GPU to 1/3rd of "default" the game still runs somewhat smooth (except for some minor lags now and then) and keeps stable at 101°C :D

Not the best solution, but it will suffice until I will get a new laptop (luckily, I planned to do so in mid-2010). Thanks for your help - both of you! :)

I will nevertheless check the laptop interiors for dust soon; just to make sure my laptop will survive another year ;)
