Some questions before i get started

Well i was out of town for a week and was browsing the web and came across a demigod game so I decide to go buy it. I havent gotten a chance to play it since im on a crappy laptop but some questions arose about the gods.

I was reading the manual and they said that there were generals and assassin ( or something like that ) I was wondering what gods were the best at being a assassin ( a god that does alot of damage ) and a general (the gods that are more of a support class) and if there are any gods that are just plain bad. I was reading and I saw that some gods take a while to get use to playing and I was wondering which one those were so I dont waste any time. I just want to start out by playing a straight forward god so I can get the hang of the game first then i can expand on who I like the best, and second are there any upgrades and items that are a must have / stay away from  no matter what

thanks for any info!!!

Well Sedna is a good character for supporting your teamates and Unclean Beast is a newb friendly heavy hitter.

Edit: do not buy the plate visor helm ill have more for you later.

I really love the calculator on this page. It let's you play around with different builds and check out their effects. The most useful info I got out of it was how the various mana regen items stacked.

the Compilation of Demigod Guides thread is a good place to start, check out the general gameplay tips first and then move on to the specific demigods:

most people do well stacking HP items, and speed items can help sometimes also. it's pretty easy to start out in single player and see which demigods you like.

Not sure if it still applies, but when I started playing the word on citadel upgrades was:

1st level gold

1st level experience

1st level tower offense and health upgrades

creep types right up to catapaults

upgrading creep armor, attack, and death time-outs was regarded as largely a waste of money, better spent on either the other ugprades or on items & artifacts.

Blood of the Fallen is a must have favor item. Vlemish Faceguard is nice for mana issues.

As for demigods, there is little difference between assassins and generals in most cases. My two recommendations:

Unclean Beast = Good solid heavy hitter

Sedna = TANK (not support, not minions), pounce hits really hard.

And for reference:

Qot = Difficult to play support, healer.

Rook =  Difficult to play support, damage.

Regulus = Easier to play support, finisher.

Erebus = Minions

TB = Spells/AoE

Oak = Little of everything

this is my take on 3 each demigod in 3 sentences or less

Assassins:

Unclean Beast - melee type. very high DPS. fast movement, good at chasing. oriented heavily towards killing other DGs, only average (or below average, depending on skills build) at map control. key skills: Venom Spit, Ooze, Diseased Claws, Inner Beast, Foul Grasp. Beast is a burst damage oriented Demigod. the combo of Venom Spit, Foul Grasp, and then a second Venom Spit combined with melee claw attacks will kill almost anyone.

Torchbearer - spellcaster type. large variety of powerful AoE damage spells. best fire spells are Fireball for DG harrassing/killing and Fire Nova for blowing up creep waves. best ice spells are Rain of Ice (good at everything) and Frost Nova (very disruptive). Permafrost (the ice form aura) is very useful. the fire aura is less good.

Regulus - ranged sniper type. low DPS but long range and good trapping/ambushing ability. excellent at killing enemy DGs either with land mines (can be thrown right at enemies like grenades) or Snipe (extreme range direct damage, great at finishing low health demigods that are retreating). below average at map control.

The Rook - area control specialist. slow moving so depends on his area control stuff to make it unappealing to approach him. can lockdown a portion of the map with his Power of the Tower and his auto-firing shoulder turrets. extreme damage combo with Boulder Roll + Hammer Slam.

Generals:

The Oak - two approaches to playing Oak. one is a minion commanding general. this approach uses Raise Dead Ward as a primary skill and develops a strong army of Spirits and Idol summoned minions. the other approach is to play Oak more like an assassin. this approach concentrates on Shield and Penitence.

Sedna - Sedna should not be thought of as a support healer. she can fill that role in a pinch but her healing and recovery abilities should be thought of as ways of tanking hits in combat and reducing downtime to stay in the field longer. Pounce and Heal are both excellent skills and you'll need lots of mana to keep them going. Avoid the Yetis at all costs, they are garbage.

Lord Erebus - Like Oak, Erebus can also be played either minion commander style or assassin style. minion style spends skills in Coven and Improved Conversion Aura and develops a strong force of Nightcrawlers. Assassin style develops additional combat spells such as Mass Charm instead of getting minions. All builds of Erebus will use Bite and Bat Swarm though.

Queen of Thorns - a truly support oriented Demigod. Queen is very poor at solo combat but is excellent when fighting in team situations. her Bramble Shield is an exceptionally powerful defensive support spell. Ground Spikes is a very powerful offensive support spell. its damage is on the low side but the armor debuff it produces is huge and will let your partners and your minions do extreme damage for a brief time. her greatest liability is very low health and extreme demand for mana.

Items:

must have items in the early game are Banded Armor and Scaled Helm. if you're a general also get Monks (rank 1 priest summoning Idol) as early as possible if not at the very beginning.

the best mana helm in the game is Vlemish Faceguard. Plenor Battlecrown is also good but should always be purchased second, after you've already got a Vlemish.

the best health boosting items are Nimoth Chestguard, Unbreakable Boots, and Narmoth's Ring.

damage boosting items are slightly underpowered. Slayer's Wraps is the best of them, for its cost. the next one worth buying is Mageslayer, which is much more expensive since it is an artifact not a basic item.

for generals, Idols are very good. priests are the best, followed by siege gunners, followed by minotaurs.

speed items are not so great but you still need enough move speed to stay alive or chase for kills. have to judge based on individual game situations. Boots of Speed are kinda bad. Wand of Speed is better.

later in the game some artifacts are pretty appealing. Mageslayer and Cloak of Fire are both good low cost artifacts. Bulwark of Ages and Ashkandor are probably the best higher cost artifacts.

citadel upgrades:

the most important ones are (in approximately this order) -> Tower Health 1 (they won't regen without it) -> Gold Income 1 -> Experience 1 -> reinforcement armor 1 -> reinforcement damage 1 -> tower damage 1

avoid buying the new reinforcements (priests, angels, catapults, giants) until later in the game. if you get them too early your opponents will benefit from increased gold and experience from killing them and pull ahead of you in levels. its best to buy them all at once at war rank 8 (priests, angels, and catapults together) to create a game ending final push that overwhelms the enemy.
