AAR of my first game

An AAR of my first game (from about 9 days ago). No strategy tips here. I did many bad things and very few good things. AI difficulty level was set to fool which, as you will see, compared most favourably to the human intelligence level for this particular game. My game play has changed a lot since then.

My first game went along the lines of:
1. send colonist to nearby star and explore with scout (so far so good)
2. lease some colonists from Mitrosoft as it suggested in the manual (how did that get into the manual?)
3. colonise Mars (yes Mars) and several other systems
4. run out of money (dang leases) so change tax/spend rates
5. build soil improvement and a few warships
6. more improvements, a few more colonies, few more warships and a starbase for defence
7. notice a green thingy near my systems
8. get message that Drengin freighter has arrived giving me 7BC per turn (thought this was a special event, didn't see the freighter coming)
9. run out of money yet again
10. look in manual, realise I could build freighters so I send them to the nearest world
11. alien races start giving me money to "recognise my benevolence". (I thought they were giving me money because I was always at peace with everyone, didn’t realize it was because I built enough warships to frighten them. I therefore remained peaceful in the hope of being sent more desperately needed money). Another Drengin starship arrives with exotic trade goods.
12. notice Drengin starbase on that green thingy
13. continue running out of money, morale problems continue
14. for no apparent reason the Alexians suddenly decide to join my superior culture
15. someone eliminates those friendly Drengins so my sick economy is suddenly completely wrecked
16. realise my economy is kaput because I had much trade with the Drengins so re-establish trade routes elsewhere after production resumes when treasury gets back to -500BC
17. remember the green thingy so send constructor to build starbase
18. still trying to get Mars to pay for itself
19. red wormy monster eats star base on green thingy
18. economy shuts down for about the tenth time because I went below –500BC even though friendly aliens kept giving me money and sending freighters my way
19. seems to be an “all in brawl” going on between the rest of the galaxy so some trade routes get shut down (I am at peace the entire game)
19. abandon this shambles to start new game although somehow I was actually winning!

Heh, well it sounds like you're having a good time at least. One game I played early on got ridiculous quick; the Fundamentalists ate up all the Yor worlds and became by far the strongest civilization out there, with its homeworlds defended by dozens of dreadnaughts...

(PS: I call them "awesome balls" though, 'cause the economy resource is really good.)

I had a similar experience to your Fundamentalists. In a game the I-League appeared and got really massive.

The root cause of the problem was that when a new minor appears it gets the same tech as me meaning it was so far ahead of all the other AI civs it could just have them for breakfast. Battleships against Starfighters aint fair so soon no other AI had any fleets at all. Worlds gradually flipped to I-League but no one could attack an I-League world.

When I finally used a proxy to fight the I-League I had to give the Alexians dozens and dozens of techs, I gave battleships and dreadnoughts galore and many starbases equipped up to Avatar killers. This was at Beginner level.

Newb question.

What does AAR actually stand for?

I gather from context its a step by step description
of a series of events.

From original post:

"2. lease some colonists from Mitrosoft as it suggested in the manual (how did that get into the manual?)"

OK, I'll bite, how do you 'lease colonists'? I looked in the manual and didn't see it anywhere.

Crushbone

1. Click on colony ship in the build selection.
2. Click on purchase
3. Select Mitrosoft
4. Repeat this process for several turns
5. See instalment payments drag your economy down. ;)

Well, yeah, I know how to do that, but that's leasing COLONY SHIPS, not colonists. The colonists come off of your planets, correct? Which reminds me of an annoying feature I noticed, which I'll post in another thread.
