Ships in Orbit/Defense

Question: When you have Battleaxes or anyother combat ship in orbit does that add/help the defense of the planet if attacked or does the ship have to be out in space and manually told to attack?

Also I remember reading something about ships that were stacked together in fleets if they attack it was bugged or something, has this been fixed or was it a hoax?

Defenders, battle axes, and battle hammers are defense ships, so they add their attack and defense ratings together when defending against attack. If they're in a system, they're automatically defending in combat.

Also ships in orbit get a big defense bonus. Even more if you build the numerous planetary defense buildings.

Ships in orbit get bonuses to their attack rating -- even though they are defending. (Ships must leave orbit to attack.) Ships whose defense is higher than their attack get to add 1/2 of def to att.

Ships in fleet could be wiped out together if the defender died. Dunno if this has been fixed.
