Another Star Base Question

I read in the FAQ where star base bonuses (except for defensive modules) stack. Fair enough, but how far does this go for military modules? If I build enough star bases with interdictor beams in a given sector, can I create a sector through which no enemy ship can travel?

If I could, would this be tactically viable? While it would presumably prevent enemy (meaning they belong to a race that has declared war on me?) ships from entering the sector, I am still presuming that nothing would stop them from cruising on through and then declaring war.

Of course, then they couldn't leave. That could be good or bad, depending.

On the gripping hand, if the AI can't take into account this behavior, you might end up with a situation in which ememy ships enter a sector and become "stuck" like flies on fly paper. If none of your resources are within firing range of the outermost boudary of your sector, you could presumably just ignore these ships, allowing them to continue to drain the enemy's resources (via support costs) without actually being able to do you any harm. :d

Opinions and Empirical Data welcome.

Yes, dead zones work but its value is questionable. Firstly, the cost of building multiple interdiction beam starbases at 5bc per starbase. Secondly, you need a strategically defensivable spot to create dead zones to block out enemies. Though it may be possible that you could anticipate the path which the AI may take and block those.

No, the AI would probably not know how to deal with this.

I've not tested this or anything, but don't speed affecting modules (whether positive or negative) only take effect on ships that start the turn in the affected sector?

If so, an enemy ship would get "stuck" if it stopped in such a sector, but if it went in and out in one turn it wouldn't be affected.

Either way that would be pretty funny, you could probably grind the AI war machine to a halt... the particularly vicious could just send about 100 constuctors into enemy territory and stop them from doing any sort of ship movement from their primary shipyards ;)
