Whatabout a pre-warp scenario?

That is humans are the only ones with warpdrive, other civs have super high tech in other fields and 100 billion pop on homesystem worlds.

Perhaps the yor would have colonised a few systems nearby.. and some minors have been tricked into building open stargates, thus having some colonies for some others too.

This would be a game where you as humans would get to spread far and fast almost without opposition.. until the aliens manage to spy the secret from you ;)

Including the stargate tech, which would allow transport between gate-systems, which would be the only tech for the aliens during a large part of the game..

Then including the option, as mentioned, to visit the Altarians to figure out the mystery.. which is afaik missing from the game :(
Maybe even trade the warp-tech to those you thrust.. problem just being that they would be way ahead of humans tech-wise..

I would agree, but there's a slight problem...

The hyper-drive technology kind-of got leaked before you actually build your first colony ship. As you know, this spoils an attempt to make a playable pre-warp scenario for a significant amount of time.

You could make a possible 'pre-warp' scenario that jumps from race to race and then near the end jumps forward to address the mystery of the Altarians. You could start off with one of the other races (Drengin, Yor, Arcean) and address the situation of the galaxy with stargates and no human interaction yet and a possible mystery about the precursors, followed up with the introduction of the 'hyper-drive' and then it would jump ahead to a Human/Atlerian collaboration into figuring out the similar look and the role of the precursors on the races of the galaxy. It could be some sort of strategy/rpg, similar to the current GalCiv with some drawn out scenes of diplomacy, espionage, and planetary expedition for signs of the Precursors and their disappearance.
Kinda makes me think of StarFlight...
