Always the Same Answer to My Prayers

I've prayed for so many things,
in hours of need,
so many years of want,
every prayer has received the same answer,

God gave me this crooked smile.

God put no warmth in my heart,
nor a penny in my pocket,
God only smiled on me,
halfway,
and gave the other,
the crooked half,
to me.

I'm trying to make the best of it,
and I've yet to see the worst,
in a crooked sneer,
I reveal the only thing I've made my own,
but I'll share it with you,

God gave me this crooked smile.

God turned the sun to my eyes,
swelled my joints with pain,
that I might squint in the light,
and move slower.

The day I was born,
God's smile broke in two,
and God smiled on me only halfway,

God gave the crooked half to me.

I apologize that the main line of this poem somewhat echoes Coldplay's - God Put a Smile on My Face...I never intended it to mirror an already great song, and didn't realize the connection until it was finished. So please take it as a coincidence. I was going to state this in the beginning of the piece, but I didn't want to taint it with disclaimers as I often do with everything else. Thanks for reading.

That crooked smile has make me smile so many times...so many times that I sometimes think it was also the answer to my prayers...

You've got character, that's what God gave you, be it in a crooked smile, squinty eyes, or a beautiful heart.
