Sometimes You Just Can’t Win

I arrived at the delivery point in Alabama, a new steel plant under construction, only to find they couldn’t offload me until today (Monday) as the crane was to be tied up all weekend. They were kind enough to allow me to drop the trailer there on the site, which made it a lot easier for to get around and find a motel.

This morning I went back to the jobsite to get unloaded only yo find that “they” had sent the wrong size lift booms for a something this heavy (35,000 lbs). He said the right booms should be there tomorrow but whether or not they could unload me then depends a lot on the weather as hurricane Ida is currently bearing down on us.

As I have no intention of riding out a hurricane sitting in my truck, especially as the generator is down again, I requested more motel funds from the company, to be charged back to the customer of course, and went in search of a cheap motel.

There’s nothing I can do about these delays, sometime you just can’t win in these situations and just have to ride them out.  There is a Wally World nearby, so I’ll be popping over there shortly to pick up some supplies just in case we lose power here during the storm.

With any luck, I’ll be unloaded and out of here tomorrow. I am not holding my breath on that, though. I expect that it will more than likely be Wednesday before I get out of here, at the earliest. No crane is going to operate in hurricane force winds and I don’t expect the winds to die down before then.

I have a couple of good books to read, Stephen King’s Just After Sunset and the sixth book in the Hitchhker’s Guide To The Galaxy trilogy, And Another Thing by Eoin Colter. I also have plenty of pipe tobacco, my knitting, and a dry room. I think I’ll be set once I lay in some supplies. I’ll fill my small cooler with ice and beer, some Gatorade, lunch meat, and pick up a loaf of bread. That will tide me over during the storm, even without power.
