Peaceful starbases

Does anyone ever use the peaceful upgrades to starbases? If I build a starbase, I'm going to give it a ton of armor, a ton of guns, and the ability to throw meteors at people (I play Advent). Why would you set one up to build culture, or act as a trade port, if it wastes the slots in the starbase and costs more than the normal building that accomplishes that? The only time I ever use this is if I get something like an asteroid belt in between a trade route, and I will build a starbase to connect the trade routes.

And another question, if you build a starbase in allied territory and give it the proxy government upgrade (so that the planet can survive after bombardment), will that apply if the allied planet gets bombed?

Yeah, I will use the more economical upgrades in the back line end. The TEC has a great trade port (its like 4x better than a regular trade port) the Advent has the ability to effect Alleigence which can greatly affect how much mining you are capable of doing. The Vasari eco upgrades are a bit more meh, but in a long game can be useful.

dont know about the proxy gov.

as advent i always built starbases byond the frontlines the upgrade that gives +30% to aaligence + the trade upgrade are just too good. (but i only play singler player)

As an Advent in SP, I sometimes place a starbase on a dead asteroid with the trade port.  That gives me "eyes" that fire at enemies without needing to spend anything on planetary upgrades and also strings along my longest trade route.

I use the Resupply and Construction all the time...great for setting up a controling a star.

I played one 5v5 game where a team member was heavily entrenched on the far side of the system. Eventually both enemies became frustrated and went to culture killing and he lost his home world. However, he didn't quit (our team had top two economies feeding to help).

I was able to drop an Advent Starbase on his home planet which was still entrenched. After upgrading the Starbase with the Culture Upgrade he was quickly able to re-establish his home world and start attacking again. It was a fun move, since they thought he was out of the fight.

i use a variety of upgrades as wel depending on the usage of the sb.  trade upgrades are a must in non-colonizable locations.

front line sb's are armored and gunned up as much as possible.  strike craft are always fighters since the sb's do not have anti-strike craft capabilities.

I use trade, culture, frigate production, and phase stabilizer upgrades.  All worthwhile in various situations.  Using starbases to extend your trade network is invaluable.  Three well-placed starbases gave me an 18 jump trade network just last week, which is WELL worth the expenditure.

I prefer fully upgraded strike craft with mostly bombers, PJI, Repair bays and hanger bays. I put my fighters in the hanger bays. I want them to suffer if they try spamming carriers, vasari sb, or capitals at my front/rear line. Worst case they switch to fighters and actually have to engage the starbase to remove the PJI or kill the base. I like Meteor control (econ and research permitting) to handle the up and close.

Back to the main thread though. Advent starbases do a good job of pushing back enemy culture and pushing your own culture. I've been succussful at putting an Advent starbase on the rear line with culture spam upgrades to knock out enemy planets. There are still plenty of military upgrades to add to make the starbase formadible should you be attacked from your rear guard. Again, PJI (2-3 or more) are a must when setting up rear and forward starbases. It doesn't do much good to have a fully upgraded starbase that is easily skipped by jumping to the next planet unimpeded.

I actually think the non-combat upgrades (excluding choke points) are more important for TEC and Advent as starbases can be little more than a hickup if not setup correctly or the enemy is skilled at destroying them anyway. As stated above the trade port line extension is probably the most utilized outside of last ditch defense efforts. Vasari players appear to use Starbases as the main way of attacking enemy planets-> move small fleet and migrator to enemy world, construct starbase, destroy structures/fleet, bomb planet, rinse and repeat. Seriously, if Vasari is at your door step you better have Carrier Caps and/or carriers ready to deal with this.
