3D game?

I have a question that has been on my mind for a while now. When you play Sins everything is on a 2D plane correct? However in multiple occasions such as when your fleet is on top of other ships and strikecraft, the ships are no longer on the 2D plane. Is there a way to involve 3D aspects of the game more? To order my ships to fly above my enemies to move into a superior position or out of range? Ships already do it, but is there a way to control it and make ships do so?

you mean altitude control?

I believe that if you hold the ~ key you can can where you ship go in terms of height, but you might want to check you with your key settings first.

the ~ key doesnt do anything except take me to the network screen. When I go to the key bindings list whats it called so that I can change the hotkey or whatever for it?

"EnableZOffset" is the name used in the uimappings.setting ...

Not really pratical for combat... only good for cheat and flight a little over a mines field...

I once had a fleet in a star's gravity well and ordered them to move to a planet on the opposite side of the star.  Instead of circling around to the other side laterally they went vertically over the top of the star:

No idea how to reproduce that behavior though.

They should do this whenever it is quicker to do so. You mainly only see this with stars and maybe gas giants as the gravity well is much larger than typical planets.

I believe it was Z-Axis Control, in the "Globals" group.

To use it, left click on the "move" button in the ship's abiltiy tab (or use the appropriate hotkey for it, was it D?) then move your mouse over the point you want the ship to reach in the 2D pane. After that, press the hotkey that you assigned to Z-axis and move your mouse up/down - the destination will go up/down accordingly.

It's the biggest cheat in the game ATM, by the way.
