Its still in alpha, is that good??? As oppose to a full release? I have been very tempted to upload it but I wasn't sure if I should. I guess I should give it a shot.

The FINAL is out.

it looks like its still in alpha....... and some of the new elements are not compatible with old skins... like the new playlist thing, so you've got the rest of the thing skinned, but the playlist and one or two other new elements are still that ugly standard skin. Very cool though, XMMS is still better

It seems to crash on my work machine (2k box), but when its not crashing it does its job well. But then so does 2.80.

Can someone please enlighten me why alpha/beta releases are considered inferior by most? Cutting edge mechanics, you know. You should be thrilled by it.

Because they are inferior, Alpha's are possible to eat your machine up and spit it out.

While beta's have had a little more testing and bug fixing.. and as such is less likely to do verious nasty things to your computer.

Though you should note there is a chance beta's could still do so.

Before you install Alpha's and Beta's think carefully !

(I have spent more than a few hours in dos fixing my baby)

Because of alpha's and beta's.. but i have not done so in quite sometime.

Yes it is thrilling.. even when your pc goes wahh wahh oops! boom

Anything less than a final release are inferior.. that's why it was given a Alpha or beta status..

A bug here maybe something not been implemented as yet or maybe the program is hungery and likes to eat pc's because of the said bug.

This is claiming to be a release, ont an alpha or beta.

Yes, it is a FINAL version! But it crashes with some old/alpha-beta versions skins.
But really it rocks!

Actually, it's a release candidate, not the final version. They clearly state that there may be bugs and the version you see might differ from the final version.

Having said that, the Mad Magazine skin is pretty cool.

Hmm, the MAD release in the link was an RC, but there is a final one, too... (Downloaded it from deviantart...)

I don't get it. Why would Deviantart have a final, but Nullsoft only has a release candidate? Even the main Winamp home page only mentions a release candiate preview.

In short, I'll believe it's final when Nullsoft says it's final.

Installed it on my XP box at home and its been running for 4 hours without crashing and i've been playing around with nearly all the settings.

Well i'd take it that Deviantart has got it wrong if nullsoft say's it's still a beta for final release... it happens

This has a 3.0 splash that I haven't seen, so i think this is somewhat official. It's running very smoothly for me at present. There is also a 2.x plugin WAC for those who control it externally or use other 2x plugins. Dunno how many old plugs are supported yet, though. I posted a link on the messageboard here.

Seems that Nullsoft was a little slow with updating their site. V 3.0 is on there now. http://www.winamp.com

Ah,... it's okay. I think the biggest problem I have with it is that WinAmp 2.x was so good, it's hard to beat. If I want all the bells and whistles with a media library, video, etc, I use Media Jukebox. WinAmp has always been the "other" audio app I used when I just wanted quick access to some tunes. Now, it's grown, but I'm not sure it's better. I look at it the way I look at ACDSEE. I still use their 2.x version, because it was the best for quick image browsing. Their 4.x version has grown into something that no longer serves the original purpose. I guess my point is that bigger and more features isn't always better.

I'm sorry, but I'm not going to use my OS as a guinea pig. I'll wait for the final release before I download this version...
Err, it's really not that great. The support for 2.x skins isn't total. It eat's up a HUGE amount of ressources, 20 Mb of RAM for the Xaxay skin, 10 for the default skin. The window snap-to function with custom skins sucks. And whenever you change skins, it gets minimized and sorts of lag in your taskbar for 5 seconds. I expect to see version 3.1 really fast. I'm thinking about switching to something else.

I've been running it nearly 24 hours now with no problems whatsoever. once you get used to the new media library / playlist it won't be as scary.

Some of the features we got previews of during the betas and RCs aren't in the final yet, but with good reason. Nullsoft was given a deadline to have the final out by. So everything that's not uber important is being saved for later releases. I'm sure they would have been happy to keep tinkering in betas if it weren't for that. But for a .0 version I think this is great stuff. Loads a hell of a lot faster than any of the super bloated 'media library' apps I have, and I can have the whole thing sitting transparently along the bottom of my desktop without the use of external plugins. Oh yeah, and crossfade rules XD !

the article headline is misleading.
this is wa3 final.
nullsofts slow at updating their site. They leaked the news to deskmod and betanews first cause they like them, then the other sites picked it up.
now a couple days later they updated their front page.
winamp2 skins are not created to work prfectly with wa3, they said they wouldnt from the beginning.
so create a skin for it and stop whining!
