Can't Continue after "Siege" / DreadLords

Hi!

 

I am playing the Dread Lord Campaign via the ToA Menu. After "Siege" I should be able to get to the next mission. The Mission Description is empty, only "the bullet point " ... defeat all ...") is there. When I click on continue it CTD.

What should I do? I have the newest version installed via impulse.

I have almost the same issue.

I got a new laptop (two weeks before my old one's hard disk died. pure luck), installed GalCiv II Ultimate, and copied over my savegames.

Trying to continue my Dread Lords campaign, the game crashes just before it does for Einbauschrank, but I don't even have a chance to hit continue. I barely have time to look over the mission description.

I have 2.03.

Gaah, I didn't know you could do that. I have been playing the severely outdated 1.53 version although I have the Ultimate Edition. Thanks for the headsup. Perhaps I'll replay the campaign in ToA sometimes. Now I need to decide if I should play the Dark Avatar campaign in Twilight or not. The Dark Avatar game is still a pretty recent version after all and I've read that people aren't happy with all changes that ToA brought to the game.

Trying to continue my Dread Lords campaign, the game crashes just before it does for Einbauschrank, but I don't even have a chance to hit continue. I barely have time to look over the mission description.

In your case it appears to be a video crash. As you're using Win7 RTM drivers still, try updating those from ATI first. If the problem persists, please contact [email protected] about this.

There's nothing wrong with that. In fact, the DL campaign has been design for DL, not TA. If you play the DL/DA campaign through the TA UI it will actually change the game mechanix a bit. My opinion actually is to the negative, but that is yours to find out as well.

Thanks for your input Maiden. I have indeed decided to play the Dark Avatar campaign with DA as it was designed for it. That way I have also experienced all three versions of the game when I'm done with the campaigns and can decide which version I want to use for my sandbox games. The only thing that really bothers me with having played DL 1.53 is that it's fairly buggy and I hope the more recent DA and ToA versions are better in that area. The game crashes every once in a while, often while saving, rendering that save unusable and forcing me to go back to a previous save and lose 5-10 turns each time this happens. Ship movement is also problematic with ships getting set to go to strange locations and automatically using up their unused movement points when loading a game and also ships turning up at slightly different locations than where they were when I saved the game.

I also hope the AI has been improved in DA and ToA. Only one way to find out, I suppose. I just finished the last mission in the DL campaign and am moving on to DA. Talk about a lame ending mission by the way, I had zero resistance from the Dread Lords as they didn't even manage to build a single factory before I conquered their planet with a single transport carrying 4000 fully trained soldiers. And this was on Painful difficulty where the computer has an economic bonus. I played the rest of the campaign on Crippling difficulty but went one lower this time as I expected a really tough mission being all alone against the Dread Lords in a tiny galaxy. I guess I should have raised the difficulty level instead...

I haven't played the campaign much, but from what I've read, that last mission "Escape" is a bust on any difficulty. Dread Lords take forever to build things anyway and given that there's only 1 on the planet, it will take them literally years to build a single structure. Not really sure what that mission's point was supposed to be...

On the DreadLords I have to say that in my games they behaved all pretty well. The usual tactic to storm their planet(s) very early did work out on lesser difficulty-levels, but on Suicidal it doesn't work anymore. At least, not to my experience. There's always a maxed out Defender in orbit, even when I approach in the first few months....

The point is that the higher the difficulty is, the more "methods" the AI will have at its disposal, and on "suicidal" the DL's can pretty much rushbuy one planetary improvement & one ship every turn on all planets they have. So, in fact, they don't need to have factories at all - just a Starport. As they start out with techs already (they never research, altough their planet will sometimes show flasks) they can actually have a Dreadnought on turn 2.

btw, a bit strange that there was just 1m DL's on that planet - usually it's 20m. Maybe just a Troop Transport got away unnoticed (?)

Oh, I'm playing Dark Avatar now and just as I hoped it has much less bugs. It hasn't crashed at all so far and the ships also behave as they should. I'm also liking the improved research tree although the revised engines are forcing me to rethink the way I design my ships.

Just as I had read on these forums the Dread Lords campaign was quite disappointing with only two truly challenging missions. I think they were called Siege and Armageddon. The 9th mission at first seemed like a good challenge with the Drengin holding some amazingly good planets and outnumbering everyone else. They however stayed in their corner for the whole time and when I was able to send in a single transport and conquer one of their planets that they had left undefended they immediately surrendered and gave all their planets to the Yor. This despite them still being the most powerful race. The Yor, having only one planet until then, was way behind technologically and in every way. It took a long time for them to build defenders on their new planets and it didn't take many turns for me to purchase more transports and capture them all. Then the Yor surrendered to the Altarians and I got a way too easy victory.

This trend of the AI players surrendering as soon as they lost a planet or two occured throughout the campaign. Especially the Drengin always left to let the Yor fend for themselves. At first when the Drengin were supposedly tactically retreating from the Dread Lords it at least fit the story, but at the end when the Drengin were supposed to be superior it was just lame. If the story is set so that the Drengin are undefetable and the Terrans are just able to activate a device that saves the Earth there should be some set parameters in the mission that really make the Drengin unbeatable. The campaign that I played very much contradicted the story as the Drengin (and Yor) never really were a big threat to me and the Dread Lords could often be ignored.

On the final mission the Dread Lords did have a population of 20m. They should have had enough money to purchase whatever they wanted and cause me a lot of trouble while I was establishing my infrastructure. Instead they just sat there waiting for my transport. I never use rush tactics, I like to take things slow and build up my economy, research and defenses before attacking anyone. In this mission I might as well had stormed them ASAP as it didn't make any difference.

I hope it's true that the Dark Avatar campaign is better. The first mission was a cakewalk with me having 7 planets against the Drath's single one, but I suppose it was supposed to be easy and at least the missions haven't contradicted the story so far. I guess I need to start playing at the Suicidal difficulty too.
