The bad, bad Leroy Brown of survey ships...

Am I reading my display right? When I run over a piece of space junk and get a bonus to my ship i.e. +1 to weapons, +4 to hit points, those are being applied to my survey ship?
Because at the moment I've got a survey ship with 71 hit points an attack of 7 and a defense of 15! Now I've just started playing but it seems like this ship would be one bad mother in a battle, I mean aren't we talking battlecruiser stats at that point? Or am I missing something?

Yes, that's the whole point. It turns from being a harmless explorer into something pretty tough. But it takes a long time to get that powerful, and sooner or later someone will develop a battleship or dreadnaught that can take it down, and it's not like you can produce an army of powerful survey ships.

I've seen games where the Hero could stand up to Overlords :) Never excaliburs, though (at least not unless the excalibur is attacking).

I'd save some of those anamolies for the rangers, since the ranger start out about as powerful as dreadnaughts, but can escalate quickly in power.

that's a good idea about rangers but you can't really save anomalies can you? I thought they appeared and disappeared randomly.

they appear randomly, but afaik they don't disappear. the reason you can't save em though is because other races will pick them up too.
