trading for tech, money, etc.

is there a way to ask the AI diplomat for a tech without it being an ultimatum. When I contact an alien civ and pick a tech of theirs that I would like, the dialogue screen says "Although you could crush me like a bug I must insist on having this tech." Why can't you simply ask "how much?"

Good Question... If I trade tech's from an AI, I usually do it this way:

I pick all the techs I want from them.
I add so many techs from me until it becomes green or all if it does not.
If it was green, I go back to their side and select money.
I raise the duration slider to max and step by step increase the payment slider until it becomes yellow.
Now I decrease the duration slider until it becomes green again.
If it was green, I select my money and set the duration to 1, because there is a bug that makes that cheaper than letting it at 0.
Then I raise the amount slider until it becomes green... If it does not, I deselect a tech from them...

Well, quite a long algorithm there... think an option to ask what the AI want's would save a lot of sliderwork...

ahh...I missed the color aspect of it. So in the dialogue box when the conversation turns green you've got a deal?

yep green equals good but always ask for money until it just turns yellow then go back to green to get the most out of any trade.

One possible con to that trading strategy is that you're not getting the full value of what you're selling. The AI gives you more if you sell each item piecemeal as opposed to being bundled. Unless it values tech-tech trading differently than tech-money trading, you could probably get more bang for your buck by seeing how much they'd charge you for what you want, then selling stuff incrementally until you get to that figure.

Yea, it only took me about 8 demo games and 5 full games to notice the color change :SURPRISED:

...and, as far as I can tell, color is a certain indicator. I've never had a green deal refused, nor a yellow deal accepted.

(Unless, of course, you're simply making demands and not offering. Then it's always blue regardless of whether or not they'll pay.)
