yet another LAN problem

hooked up with a cable and all firewalls off?

I'm trying to play Sins-Trinity between a Vista Desktop and a Windows 7 Laptop

If i set it up the old school way with a cable and take off firewalls, we can both see eachothers games and attempt to join. As many others on this forum I get the error message something along the lines of "Disconnected from server host" (sorry, it's some time ago and I couldn't bother to turn both pc's on and set it up ot check)

I've read many places on these forums that it's all about "portforwarding", and that I need to forward port 6112 and possibly 6000, I would be completely fine with this if my internet wasn't supplied by my Dad's job (I haven't got the password or username for my router, and no admin/admin or administrator/administrator doesn't work). Could Changing the port used when hosting make a difference (changing it from the default 6112)

Just wanted to ask and make sure that port forwarding is the only solution, because in most other cases both pc's weren't able to see eachothers games. And yes, i have hamachi and I tried it. just gives me a whole new set of error when I join.

Any help greatly appreciated! Disloyal_Ape

You could try a crossover cable, basically a lan cable that does away with the need for a router and there cheap.

I'm pretty sure the cable I'm using is a crossover cable, I have used it to host games in e.g. Company of heroes

Have you tried playing over Ironclad Online instead?  You might have better luck hosting that way since you would be able to use Alloy.

No, changing a port will not matter.  If you can't set things up to forward all traffic coming in on a specific port to a specified system it's not going to matter what number/port you assign that traffic to.

Any blockages on a "network-path" must be handled correctly (ie. with forwarding of traffic)  OR  encapsulating traffic so it can tunnel past blockages (ie. the way Hamachi does it or by using the ALLOY hosting method mentioned by DirtySanchez)

I'm playing 2 pc's LAN on one cd-key, I can't play online 2 at the same time can I?

Sounds to me from what you're saying, that Hamachi should work. But I tried it and I got an error about the two games not being the same patch (somethin about differing "mesh files"), but they're both v 1.011 (or something like that)

thx for the replies :sun:

Ha, mesh files again.

Fix for "Your mesh files differ from the host".

I guess that's the only solution then, it might be because I had the demo and didn't properly un-install it before installing Trinity

Sucks though as I have a so far 7 hour game going:\ , which will be gone if I re-install (or can I manually save it somewhere else?)

The Mesh problem is most likely the game itself and not you.

Saved games are not deleted with un-install. I dont think any of the files or folders in

C:\Users\myfist0\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire

are deleted. Mods, saves, maps etc

Saved games will not work when updating or changing mods

Ok, will try to re-install and re-update on both pc's. Then launch through Hamachi

Re-installing from a disk might put those mesh files back depending how old your disk is. Just delete the bad mesh files and verify install with impulse.

I'll try and delete the files mentioned in your earlier links, first

EDIT: Those files mentioned in you link we're the same

BUT I FIXED IT, I shared my mesh file folders from the three different games= original sins, entrenchment and diplomacy. I then deleted the mesh folders on the other pc (my laptop in this case) and inserted the ones from my desktop, ensuring they are the same. So now it works, still far quicker than re-installing everything  \o/

Thx for all the usefull replies though
