Make XP look like 98, please help!

I know this sounds dumb, but I'm at a job where I'm not suppose to use WinXP, I can only sport 98. I can't get anything done 'cause 98 blows and keeps crashing. I need to make XP look and boot just like 98. I've tried using some of these programs, but honestly, I suck at it. Can anyone help me, please!? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Why not simply change your theme from 'Windows XP' to 'Classic' in the display properties. It will go back to the legacy 9x look with XP functionality.

The boot screen. Well, you can hack the ntoskrnl.exe file and change the bitmaps (like I did) or you can download one of those prgrams to change it. Finally, which I shouldn't suggest, you can download an already changed ntoskrnl.exe file. But that's pretty much illegal, and not so safe. You decide.

Changing the theme to classic is all well and good, but I still need to change the picture on the Start Menu bar. As far as the ntoskrnl.exe is concerned, what would you suggest to use to change that? I'd need to change the shut down screen as well. Thanks.

How will  you explain the lack of BSOD's?
When I read the thread title, I thought you were joking, or out-of-your-mind. I would say you have an awesome task ahead.
Why aren't you allowed to run anything other than 98?

Well, I work for a school where I teach computers, and the guy who's in charge knows nothing about computers at all. He believes that XP has too many security holes (and most of the people at the school are still running 95!) If someone can help me change that Start Menu bar pic, I should be able to handle the rest.

Time to travel into the realm of VirtualPlastic once again. How to change your start menu bitmap:

For ntoskrnl.exe,

Resource hacker - http://delphi.icm.edu.pl/ftp/tools/ResHack.zip
Tutorial - http://theeldergeek.com/boot_logo_01.htm

Now maybe if you ask nicely someone might be able to geive you a picture of what the Windows 98 bootscreen looks like so you can replace the XP bitmap with the 98 bitmap.

And there ya go. You should have everything all changed.

But why does it matter if you have XP? Its your computer so you are intitled to have what ever OS you want...... and if he disputes that I would be takeing it legaly. Why does your world have to revolve around him??? Just becuse he likes 98 bettter? That's stupid.

There's a bunch of people who make Windows 3.11 look just like 98...or 2000....can't be any harder to go the other way....even LiteSTEP could be made to do all that...

Yeah, I remember using a program that made Win 3.11 look like 95 (taskbar, groups, simply everything) for some time until I switched.

The security holes that are found in WinXP also existed when Win98 first came out. Notice that every time a security hole is found, a patch is also made for Win98 as well. It is because more and more people are trying to hack the latest, and most fabulous operating system, that these holes are being found with WinXP. Just be thankful to WinXP that people are taking the time to find and patch them, instead of having your system hacked.

1. If you were a car thief, would you want to steal a Ferrari or a Toyota? (why hackers target windows).
2. And if you wanted to steal a Ferrari would you target the new models or an old model?(why hackers target winXP vs. win98 or Win95).

This is simple logic to most people who know about the computing world, but if you are computer ignorant as some "school principals" might be, then maybe you should enlighten them with a little information and knowledge, so they might improve beyond their ignorance.
