missing image files, general sks issues I've run into

Ok so I've been tinkering with both SKS6 and SKS7 making a substyle of one of my old XP skins. So far all is well, but I have noticed that some of the image files are not packaged with either version of SKS I have. For instance, if I want to edit the explorer navigation arrows they come up as "no image defined - section may be optional." I've looked everywhere and thus far, the only way I've been able to skin them is to open Stardock's Diamond Vista substyle and edit those.

Also I've noticed that the same can be said for all of the start menu logoff buttons. There's actually quite a number of image files I really need present in order to skin them.

Here's a small list of them that i've come across that are not packaged.

Both IE and Win explorer navigation arrows

All start menu logoff buttons

folders link arrow in explorer

places toolbar background image

All of the Control Panel images

Explorer search icons

There's a lot more, but I want to keep this post minimal. These are not terribly huge issues but I was just curious to know if there's a reason why they're missing. I kinda feel like I'm swiping Stardock's images whe I have to pilfer them from Diamond...lol.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Since you originally skinned for XP, then any skin part which is specifically for Vista or 7 will show up as "no image defined," because they were never skinned.

Now, if this is happening on XP parts that you have skinned, then I'd say just open it up in SKS5 and locate the images that way. But I would think that, if you skinned them before, that SKS would find them.

Nah...I just tried making a new fresh skin in SKS7 and they're still AWOL...lol. I think they don't come packaged. I'll consider using Diamond as a skin base. Hopefully Neil and the Stardock crew won't lynch me for it! lol.

oh crap I forgot to say thank you!!! Thank you...lol

Oh and one other inquiry, I noticed Vista won't allow me to use lower window buttons.

I have the help and rollup buttons located on the right of the bottom frame but they won't appear. The skin I'm using has no per pixel frames so I know that's not it. I also loaded up Mike Bryant's Airlock skin (one of my alltime favorites!) and same issue. Neither skin shows buttons on the bottom frames :'( Is this a known issue or is it just me?...lol.

What OS are you on, if still XP there will be no need for Vista/7 images.

Seems to be working for me. Try this:

1. Go to the "Edit titlebars and windowframes" section.

2. Go to the "Edit uis2 frames" subsection.

3. Choose "Titlebar buttons."

4. Choose the button you wish to edit the position for from the preview.

5. Click on the "Position" tab.

6. Choose an option from the drop-down menu under "Button should be positioned relative to the".

7. Be sure to tinker with the values for distance away from edges until the button is positioned where you want it.

Nope, I even bumped it by 1 px and back to see if it might pick it up. See the issue is it's not visible. They both function when I click the area, but neither button is visible.

Here's the settings I'm using.

the image is a 6 frame .tga

Button has per pixel alpha

Action: one is rollup window, the other is help.

Button should be positioned relative to the: Bottom right of the window

The button should be: 35 pixels from the left / right edge (rollup)

and 16 pixels from the top edge.

The buttons' visibility are set to "Always Show Button"

They actually show up in the SKS6 and 7 preview windows but not on the actual skin.

Like I was saying though, it's not just mine but Airlock too. Really weird!

Thanks again for the help!

You can use any skin as your base.....as long as you make sure that there are no images that aren't yours left over if you wish to upload here on WC or another skinning site.

As for why sections are missing images:

The images or sections that aren't skinned are elements that Vista/Win7 automatically replace with default images if left unskinned. So you get a fully working skin just the same.

If the template was 100% complete, then it may be tempting for some to leave the supplied images be if they don't look bad with the rest of the skin. I know that the moderators here look through submissions to make sure that no elements are "borrowed" from other skins.

See I figured they were Windows copy written images or something. I didn't even think about them being excluded for that reason...lol. I don't plan on submitting any of my skins. I do it just to tweak my own machine a bit. I'm realizing now that some elements either don't make the crossover or can't make the crossover from XP to Vista.

I STILL can't get the rollup and help buttons to appear on the bottom border like they're supposed to. I've checked all the settings, tested several times, and even redid the images themselves and nothing seems to work. It's not a huge deal, but even though they still function, I still want to SEE them....lol.

Same as on my back-up rig,an eMachines 2958 with onboard Intel graphics....yuk! I hope to find a PCI(not PCIe or AGP) card that supports Win7/Aero but other than that, it serves it's purpose. WB doesn't look it's best though, that's for sure.

why is that???

  Because MS won't give me a "0";P

I have no idea...lol. I'm running an Alienware Aurora 7500 with a 256mb ddr Nvidia 8600 GTS PCIe card and 2gb ddr2 memory.

By windowblinds' review I shouldn't even be able to run per pixel yet I know my rig more than handles it. Weird eh?
