Skin Studio/ substyles?

Maybe I am going crazy, I don't know
For some reason every time I try to import a style into my first skin, they both show up the same.
Make skin 1. Make skin2. Import #2 into #1, then #1 looks like #2 exactly
Tried doing it manually too, but to no avail. Sounds a little like who's on first, but any help would be appreciated

I've played with sub-styles a little and the only way I could get them to work was first create a sub-style of the existing skin, while you have it open in skinstudio then go to the opened sub-style and individually import all the new files making sure none are the same name as the original skin. Probably an easier way...that's just the way us white mountain rednecks do things in New Hampshire

I ask about the best method to combine 2 existing skins, in the newgroup just a couple of days ago...... Alain's reply is pretty much the same thing DavidK told me. It works likes a charm.

Make backups of both skins folders, or make work copies of the original skins under another folder.
Navigate to the folder of the skin you want to change to a subskin. Change the *.UIS file to *.SSS.
Make sure that there are NO images that share the same name if they are not identical.
Move all of the folder's files to the new folder. Open the *.SSS file and update the paths to the new location.
Create a *.SSD file or edit it if it already exist. Add referances to the various skins (use any preexisting one, from any compoune skin, as a template)
You can also use skinstudio, but I personaly never done it

are the subskins the same but one is using a compact start menu? if so, it's very easy.

Yes, I have a compact menu for the second style

OK, I have pulled all my hair out
I have tried just about everything suggested here and the skin shows fine with the substyles on my box, but not on anyone else's. Would someone be interested in taking a peek and tell me what the heck I am doing wrong. Please

I found the problem, me thinks............ the UIS files reads this way....

[TitlebarSkin]
SkinName=Niobium
SkinAuthor=Bones2112
[email protected]
SpecialNotes=
AuthorsURL=www.skinartistry.com
Generator=Stardock SkinStudio Professional ver 4.0.0, Build 831  - http://www.skinstudio.net
WBVer=400
EditorNotes=Made for the 2004 GUI Olympics

[XPShell]
File=NiobiumBlue\ShellStyle.xps

[Animations]
File=NiobiumBlue\Luna.Animations

[ToolbarIcons]
File=NiobiumBlue\Luna.ToolbarIcons

[XPTaskbar]
File=NiobiumBlue\Niobium_xpstuff.xp

[Personality]
BUTTONCOUNT=39
ColourAware=0
Top=NiobiumBlue\NiobiumBlueWindowFrameTopUis2.bmp
Left=NiobiumBlue\NiobiumBlueWindowFrameLeftUis2.bmp
Right=NiobiumBlue\NiobiumBlueWindowFrameRightUis2.bmp
Bottom=NiobiumBlue\NiobiumBlueWindowFrameBottomUis2.bmp

The skin name is Noibium, so that's the folder that is created upon installation.... but all the file are pointing to a NoibiumBlue folder, which doesn't exist on anyones computer other than yours. So, it works for you, but can't find the images for anyone else.

Simple fix is rename the skin in the UIS, to NiobiumBlue.

Now that I think about it, you can't just rename the skin in the UIS, but it will have to be saved as such.......
(this stuff always confuses me), and now that you see the problem I'm sure you'll figure it out.

That is supposed to be the name of the skin, so something is wrong, hmmm.

[SkinStyles]
Number=3

[SkinStyle0]
Name=NiobiumBlue
Skin=NiobiumBlue.uis

[SkinStyle1]
Name=Niobium
Skin=Niobium.sss

[SkinStyle2]
Name=NioCompact
Skin=NioCompact.sss

I found that there was a Niobium.uis file still in there so I am gonna send you another All the skin are the same except the start menu also.

Works fine now! That rouge UIS file was the problem I guess.
