I am thinking about buying Sins but I would like to get some idea of how active it is these days? Will I spend ages trying to find people to play a game? I'm on GMT. Thanks for the help.
It's a great game, but sadly, the online multiplayer aspect of it is pretty dead. For regular Sins, you'll find almost no pvp activity since it's mostly newer players playing passworded comp stomp games with their friends. (Amazingly, there's guys who've played over 100+ comp stomps online who have yet to try it against real opponents (other people).) You won't find much pvp activity for the Entrenchment expansion, either, since most pvp players purchased the Diplomacy expansion.
For the Diplomacy expansion you will find some 4v4s and 5v5s, but they normally occur in the North American evening, which is probably around 2:00 am GMT. Also, you still have to wait for those games to fill at that time.
It really is a great game in online multiplayer, and it doesn't have nearly the number of people playing it online as it should. However, I can't recommend it for someone who's interest is online multiplayer pvp right now. It is over 2.5 years old, so I guess the online multiplayer activity is showing its age. The release of Starcraft 2 really hurt us, though it wasn't all that much better two months ago. Perhaps the biggest problem with this game is that 99% of all purchasers only played it offline in single player.
Maybe if you could find the game and its two expansions (Trinity) on sale somewhere for 5 pounds it would be worthwhile.
Yeah multiplayer is the main thing I'm looking for. It's a shame that most of the classics have so little activity anymore. I played Sins a while back and enjoyed it over LAN but I didn't really like the single player. Defeating an AI (on any game) doesn't give much satisfaction. Thanks for the info.
Ya, I miss the days of semi playership. I'm still pretty mad they never got the balance right with the vasari.

...and yes not having the Vasari ever properly balanced was one of the reasons I never really got into pvp much myself...
I think it's pretty balanced now. If anything, Advent is now the weakest race. Vasari and TEC seem to be on par with many pros now playing TEC (and not Vasari).
Last I knew vasari was NOT balanced with them being OP. Granted I haven't played much in 2-3 weeks but its not like it has changed in that time other than having fewer players since SC came out. Thus we have the multitude of "community balance mod" discussions on the other sections of the forum.

Other than that, it is fabulous.
the ai is SIGNIFICANTLY improved from the origional sins... you might just want to give it another go, and definately use it as practice till you can wipe the floor with a hard comp. (aka: no hiding behind starbases or surviving untill you have that special lv6 ability)
saw a copy of trinity on sale for 30$... thats one game and 2 expansions for 30.... next to starcraft 2... for $60... a game in which they purposfully removed units so they could put them into the expansion packs...

I was really tempted to just pick up another copy, so i could invite a friend over and set him up on a second computer on ico or something.... or do, 4? people on a lan (2 lan players per copy, right?)... actually next time i see it...

I mean come on... the same cost for starcraft would be $120+ expansion packs. BS.
I think most pros have figured out how to deal with the dual-Skinatra rush. A great many and perhaps even most of the pros are going with TEC now, including pros who used to play Vasari, so apparently they seem to think that TEC is better. Advent seems to be getting the short shrift now.
If I knew I was going to be in an econ spot, I would play Advent. But playing TEC now is a refreshing change of pace, and definite solution for those pesky Vasarii Skirantra Hooooors.
Why? IMHO, Advent is the worst race for going eco and it's one of the reasons I prefer Vasari over Advent.
Either that or they're just getting bored.
