Recoloring clothing?

I learned how to recolor skins successfully (whew), but for my next desktop I want to go the other way and recolor my wall instead. Specifically, I need to recolor a piece of clothing that has polka dots on a white background. I tried my previous technique, but it didn't turn out the way I expected...lol. I'm using Photoshop 6. Thanks in advance.

Um.. Many ways to do this..
1. Selective Color feature of photoshop, and forgive me if it isn't available in versions prior to 7...
Simply select the color[s] to be changed and go from there.

2. Make a selection using the [magnetic?] lasso tool or the lasso tool around the object[s] to be re-colored. When you're satisfied with the selection's placement, hit CTRL+J to copy that selection into it's own layer. From there you can recolor/skin to your heart's desire.

3. Paint a "mask" on the area to be edited in Quick Mask mode, then use the selective color feature [or Hue/Saturation CTRL+U] to change it that way.

4. Zoom up to 1600% and edit pixel by pixel.. .. Try the first three first, tho.

My apologies if these features are not in PS6. Hope it helps. Good luck

..ps: this is all assuming the area to be edited/changed/modified is a relatively small area
