I haven't bought the game yet, launch reviews were not too kind. I don't like the idea of the game I buy being outdated and in dire need of multiple patches on day 1....kind of defeats the purpose of having a disk at all. So much for all the pro single player ( no DRM ) aspects of the game when you have to go online to update the sucker.

I find it more than a little bit amusing that this game launched as it did when Brad dissed demigod to know end railing on about what he would have done better at launch...

It's weird but you're right.

When I bought the game I didn't really spend much time actually playing it as it was apparent immediately that it was full of bugs and rushed out the door way too soon. However, I could see that the game had potential, so I followed the forum looking for patches and info.

All of the ongoing posts from Wardell, the dev team and the community had me checking the foum regularly.

I've kind of given up on actually playing Elemental in the near future but still feel that between the 10 hours spent in the game and the 10 hours spent following the whole release debacle that I've somehow gotten entertainment enough to make me feel that my money wasn't wasted buying the game.

Whether or not Elemental will turn into a great game down the road remains to be seen, but I'll probably check in on it from time to time just to see what happened.

The last game that I bought before Elemental was WC2 so I must admit that the contrast is striking.

I really like these forums, too. The level of maturity strikes me as higher than average, there's plenty of good discussion going on, and I often spot posts that crack me up. I also like the technical aspects -- the board's accessible and usable, and it loads quickly.

You're all appreciated, and you don't need patches!

The Code Function is COMPLETE CRAP
It numbers every line so that copy and paste is useless, and it arbitrarily highlights crap
Because it apparently thinks it knows better than you what parts you want to emphasize
Oh and it has no cut off point for the code box, it can go on for pages instead of containing the code in a finite table

There are no file attachment options

Any time you edit an OP it FORCES you to type a reason why, even if it's just a minor edit like a single character spell correction.

And there are several other gripes.

I also just find the game enjoyable as it is, well as it is after I've modded it (I couldn't stand the default colors for a couple of factions, and I had to diversify the terrains to include desert and winter). I look forward to the next patch.

I agree. Add poor multi-quote functions too.
But the community here is stellar and that weighs up for a lot of technical crap.

The last line is particularly ironic given that Elemental will be at least 2 weeks after launch before it has any form of working multiplayer. The only other game I've ever bought with a problem like that was Demigod (and that took 3 weeks before I could play on the official servers, but at least it had LAN play so Hamachi made it playable).

For their next game, I REALLY hope they take a "when it's ready" approach to releasing it. Their reputation can only take so many botched releases in a row before people see "Stardock" and automatically assume "buy in 6 months". (And since Elemental basically doesn't exist at retail anywhere outside the US, I don't think making the retail date was worth the reputation damage this launch caused.)

I am one such retail customer outside the U.S. I have 6gig/month internet ( no download ) and I exclusively play single player/skirmish type game modes.

I was waiting for the launch and was relying on the disk not requiring updates and such because of my internet/my general contempt for online gaming...

So now if I bought it, I would be doing so knowing the disk is worthless, and basically having to buy one of the updated replacement disks brad talked about them making for this game. How about they just announce when they release a working retail version and i'll buy that...

Maybe spend an extra 5 cents giving the game a hard plastic case too. For a full price game, a loose disk in a carboard box doesn't really cut it in 2010...I felt ripped off when my demigod C.E was a crap carboard box full of throw away junk and a bent pewter figure. Stardock clearly spare no expense with game development and distribution.
