On bandwidth and existance

During the past days we have experienced unbearable performance due to the arrival of new people on this site. The heavy traffic requires a lot of bandwidth which I imagine is very costly. Since the people running this site isn't multi-billionaires we must strive to reduce the traffic, we wouldn't want this site to end up dead like many other sites have done lately.
I think these limitations (only members can download, smaller screenshots etc) is a good short term solution but for a lasting solution something rather radical has to be done. I've just read an article over at teknidermy.org and the publisher there has some intresting ideas on "skinportals". I think everybody should read the article http://www.dezina.org/teknidermy/issue5/artapoc.html and think about it. That way only very little files have to be stored on the portal, therefore decreasing traffic.

The idea could only be implemented if there was some standard on screenshots, readmes, files and some way to identify the skin and its application. But I think someone more competent than me should look at it and come with suggestions.

The trouble is that it is quite a radical shift moving from one site hosting all the skin to a site serving merely as a portal. Therefore, I don't see this site changing to that model.

By the way, Jumbles has implemented a cell system over at http://www.dezina.co.uk

I understand that it is a very radical shift from now and therefore impossible to carry on on this site. But I do think that if a large site like WC started an alternative site with the cell system it would get more skinners to join that site. Because something has to be done, the classical way of skinhosting is a path that leads straight to the death of the site.
