Trading for influence points?

I am ever-so-slowly getting the knack of bartering tech to bring the AIs to their knees economically...at times, they have no cash left to spend but I have techs left over. What is the real value of trading for influence points rather than cash? What is it that I really gain? What are the consequences for the AIs?

Helps your votes in the UNited Planets or whatever it is called. Hurts theirs. No bad effect on the minors, AFAIK.

Early on, I spend some tech taking ships of some of them - freighters can be a good deal IMHO. Just ry not to buy ones that are heading for one of your planets...

Consider saving up tech to get starbases off them...

Thanks Ralegh - I'll go back to the drawing board! Kudos also for your work on the manual for the GalCiv community. Cheers!

I agree about the freighters- though I find that its best to PURCHASE starbases and simply sell techs for as much money as possible, without neglecting the 'pay me this much PER TURN, CHUMP! HAHAHHAHAA' slider on the trade window.

what i dont like about tradeing for ships is if they are out of range. i tried buying a drengin colony ship that just made it to the opposit corner of the map from me, and it was just about to colonize a planet. i succesfully bought the ship, but i couldnt colonize that planet! it was out of range!
