Palm vs. PocketPC

Palm vs. PocketPC

I've been a long time Palm III owner and am starting to think about getting a new PDA. But I'm not sure which to get. I'm starting to get somewhat frustrated with the lack of innovation and advancement with the PalmOS (low resolution displays, relatively limited abilities).

Is there going to be any major updates to PalmOS in the near future that would make it worth waiting for or should I look at getting the next generation iPaq when it comes out. What do you guys think?

Personnaly, if it wasn't for all the software availabel for Windows, I would definetly choose another platform, most likely Linux, QNX, or BeOS.
Now, why would I be foolish enough to choose another MS for my palm device, when software support is actually inferior? Rubish...

And I am quite surprised there are not more people here that are speaking up for the Palm OS based devices, since on the market they are a lot more popular. Probably has to do the art-oriented population here is more attracted to the Pocket PC's eye candies...

..eye candies? Just because it is faster and looks better?

Doreen wrote "I can do "anything" on my ppc that I can do on my Computer and "more" cuz I can do it when I'm anywhere at anytime... (including wireless irc! can ya do that on agenda gadgets only??? no...)"

So... fire up Photoshop and SkinStudio and make us a WB skin on your almighty PPC Or maybe AutoCad or 3D Studio MAX? Illustrator? Ok... those are all too hard... how about MicroAngelo, or something tiny like BeatNik.

If all you use your PPC for is net stuff and text (based) files, you're fine. But "real" computing requires a "real" computer. Having to attach large tethered peripherals to your "pocket" computer makes the whole "pocket" concept moot.

Listen to Russ. I have actually played with one of them PDA things (played with a WebPad too, those things have some serious design flaws: big, clumsy, heavy). Anyway, I can't remember which brand it was, but it ran WindowsCE. Poked around with it a bit, played some Zelda on an emulator, got a splitting headache from staring at that so so LCD display which is only visible at certain angles and concluded that it was nothing but a glorified agenda. Hence the name: Personal Digital Assistant, as in agenda, calendar, address book.

wrong....

Pocket Artist hahaha (I think that is what it is called)

yup you "Can" do just about anything on your PPC

Atleast w/ "your skills Riss" you would fire up "Pocket Artist" and whip out a windowblind while waiting in line somewhere... hehe

If you're a programer or web designer as well you can also code & program as well as design a web site while on your ppc too!

you can do anthing really

Or something like that.

"gimme one day w/ my IPAQ w/ any of you palm guys and you would never go back to your palms."

As a former Palm user, listen to Doreen. I don't argue that the different OS's are for different people, but with newer Palms, they're just priced too high for there to be any competition at all. Why should I pay the same as for an Ipaq and get less? Makes no sense.

However, I can obviously see where one of the "lesser" Palms would suit you if you weren't looking for everything and the kitchen sink. Keeps you organized, lots of accessories if you want them, and a very an excellent collection of software out there.

But as long as Palm keeps the prices equal, there's no comparison. Palm is digging it's own grave without help from anyone else. PocketPC all the way.

You just can't do anythign with a pocketpc that youc an do a real PC. You can't do 3D Studio max on it, you can't do photoshop and some cute paint program on the pocketpc doesn't count. You can't do CAD. You can't doa whole range are things because either the hardware isn't up to it or the software doesn't exist. I prefer my iPaq to my Palm V but let's not get delusional.

(Cut n Paste off of Brighthand.com:)

Pocket Cortona brings CAD to your pocket pc June 11, 2001 ParallelGraphics launches

http://www.parallelgraphics.com/products/cortonace

here is the link Frank but I seriously don't know much about CAD,
(I confess I just did a quick search on brighthand)hehe

is this what it is though?

It helps to read further....

"ParallelGraphics launches Pocket Cortona, the first ever 3D VRML browser for viewing (...) VRML content"

This is not a CAD program. CAD stands for Computer Aided Design and usually applies to program with which technical drawings are made (argh, I hate CAD) or programs like 3D Studio. Or in other words, all those unnecessarily complex 3D programs.

(you know I never read through)
actually I only spotted the word CAD, thought that was it, but oh well, I give up on you guys!

thank you again, wise old man crae
hehe

CAD = Computer Aided Design?
that's it? hahaha
/me thought it meant something more sophisticated

There is at least talk of a 3d Studio Max for PocketPc, so if it's not out already, it will probably be seen shortly..

And they still can't write a decent homework-tracking program for students. Hmpf!

Plainsong I seen one somewhere but when I cleaned my machine I lost many links so I have not been around the main places I used to go to for ppc stuff

but I know I seen a homework tracking program and it was an advanced one too.

also there is a programmer that writes programs up per ppl's request
he wrote me up one when I asked him however I lost his link
arghhhhhhh

just cruise around when you get a chance and ask ppl or better yet drop that question on Brighthands board I'm sure someone will respond

(if I find that other one I seen, now that I'm back on a hunt for ppc stuff I will let you know too)

There is no Palm OS emulator available for your pocket thingy? Someone ought to write one, then indeed, the choice would hardly be difficult, since you could run any Palm OS application on your pocket thingy.

Doreen, as far as I can tell, there's only one homework program.. called Classmate by Pocket-Innovations. It looks pretty, but that's all. It's a 2mb vb file, and it's buggy. You find out only after paying 20 bucks for it that it doesn't handle it's db properly. After entering in more than 4 or 5 assignments, linking them with the right class, to the right professor to the right book just doesn't work, and to me this is the whole essence of the program.

GRRR!

Had to vent

Oh, and they're writing a PalmEmu, but in the meantime..the wait continues..

Hey wait... I just realised plainsong is a woman... Doreen, Jumbles, plainsong... is Pocket PC a female thing?
Sorry, couldn't resist...
