Why can't you heal units after combat, that's just dumb! 
Units heal in friendly territory, or in your cities. Also spells.
You can use equipment to heal units as well, the salted pork and healing potions. Just use them from the units equipment list.
Units heal in friendly territory or in cities doesn't help when your army is being attack by multiple stacks of enemies and you face one combat after another with no chance to heal. The issue is, if you can heal during combat than you should be able to heal at the end of combat.
