Yes, but wait until FE in 2012 before buying. See a review and make sure you like the style before you commit to a purchase. That goes for anything you buy.
The game is playable in the same way as doing suicide by alcoholism. It is slow, painful, and you are going to crash a lot. (Leave me alone, I am not good with negative puns...)
okay. i wont buy it.
The game is not as bad as it sounds. It is playable and I find it fairly stable. It has some interesting aspects but overall it is much less than the sum of its parts. It is a game that is fun to play the first time around but then after that it is pretty much the same time after time. At this stage I'd say it isn't really worth the $$$ but Fallen Enchantress shows some promise so perhaps best to wait for that release and see how it is received.
No, the game is pretty much as bad as it sounds. It's playable, but in the sense that making a game out of installing Windows is also playable. There's very little fun to be had.
Sadly true..
True. Honestly, the straight out of the box non patched Elemental single player is probably my favorite version. It ran good on my system at least, and had a few more toys.
S.R.
It's completely playable. It's just not really fun enough to justify repeat playing because the winning strategies very quickly become evident. If I just bought it I'd be playing it, but I won't be playing it again until there is either some great new content, or fundamentally better basic game mechanics.
The game is playable but the graphics are bland. The game play has many issues which makes it some what boring to play escpecially when combined with the graphics. The game keep having potential but never amounting to this potential. I would recommend not getting it and wait for FE.
Follow up question. Is the game playable in the same manor that DF is? i.e. that game has awful graphix, etc full of bugs etc. but its playable cause losing is fun. Is the game playable in that light?
Not really. DF has a lot of personality and interesting mechanics.
Come back when the expansion (Fallen Enchantress) is out. That looks like it'll be a much better game.
No, War of Magic is playable in the opposite way Dwarf Fortress is.
Dwarf Fortress is a fully engaging game with an unbelievable map generator where lots of different aspects lead to different games every time you play it - but it just looks like crap until you get used to it.
On the other hand, E-WoM is not engaging, has a very shallow random map generator, and no matter what the world generates it plays the same way every single time - but the graphics do look good which doesn't really mean a lot once you get used to it.
a better question is
do you have a very high threshold for boredom and frustration?
, if no then do not get wom in it's current form,
if yes then think about it,
admittedly it has pretty graphics, and pretty sound,
but poor ai and limited choices for enjoyable play that the mods that are currently available do help with,
but it is still a choice between pretty+ (graphics and sound) and pretty-(boring and frustrating),
and for longer games you NEED to play on smaller maps ie no larger than 8x8 or it will crash at BEST every few hours to every few minutes(at worst).
my longest game session to date on 1.3 is 14 hours(without a crash, on a 10x8 it usually crashes about every four hours and on a 12x8 it is usually about every 90 minutes) on a 8x8 map with 10 ai of which I had killed 2 and another three had been killed by some of the other ai's.
harpo
No mods are really going to support 1.3. Its the redheaded stepchild of WoM. But it did pave the way for a few really solid game concepts.
Well said! They are close to being at opposite ends of the game development spectrum. Would make an interesting case study!
Personally I prefer my games down the Dwarf Fortress end but not QUITE that far along ![]()
I agree with this except for the graphics part. Graphics although better than DF is still pretty bland.
Perfect summary! ![]()
Is the game playable? Yes.
Is the game fun? Not for me.
Why isn't it fun?
a. The AI is weak
b. The game mechanics lend themselves to repetitive gameplay
Why hasn't Stardock made it fun after all this time?
a. The original release of the game was buggy, the reviews reflect this and so it didn't make sense to spend a lot of money fixing that. Instead, Stardock brought in an all start team to make a sequel, give it away to the original buyers and start over.
b. A small team has been improving the game from release.
c. Starting with v1.4, I will be the only one working on it. Then again, i did write the original GalCiv on my own so I can hopefully do something with my dissasatisfaction.
Why are you flaming your own game?
I'm not a programmer or a game designer. I'm a gamer. I like playing games. I'm not happy with War of Magic. I am happy with FE but I won't tolerate WOM being left in a crappy state.
You are a true frog. Thanks Brad!
BTW I am making a special race from a text based RPG I played when I lived in Savannah (too much racial tension to go outside at night). They are froggish druids. Their leader is a boy.
Sounds racist...
The racial tension is kind of the inspiration for my evil empire.
"You think having had slavery and now just having a few old people that don't think you are equal is bad? Try living under my rule. We don't discriminate: all of you are damned."
That didn't go over very well at the bar.
