The things we take for granted ... please add yours

I just saw this and felt very moved by it. So... I thought I'd share it with you...

This is a 29 year old woman who has received cochlear implants (hearing implants) who is hearing her own voice (quite lovely, in fact) for the first time...

Great story, Doc.

I'll add my "thing": Fresh, clean drinking water. We in America rarely lack a constant supply except in times of natural disaster.

Even in Las Vegas, where the average yearly rainfall is 3.3 inches, the amount of waste is appalling. I lived there almost 17 years and the usage just kept going up. Water use restrictions are sometimes put in place, but mainly for homeowners. The hotels, casinos and golf courses paid them no mind.

Other parts of the world would love to have just what we waste on swimming pools and golf courses. They often bathe in the same water they have to drink.

Think about that when you leave that tap running.

we do take a lot of things for granted we don't know how lucky we are, thanks Doc this is awesome :sun: ;)

post, Doc.

Two things I take for granted are:

a) My rig. The truth is that like many others on here, I'd be lost without my computer. If I didn't have it I couldn't skin, I couldn't watch movies or access the internet to buy things online (outside of groceries I buy pretty much 99.9% of things online). I couldn't have created the digital artwork I have done so far, or the stuff I want to create in the days and years to come. But most importantly, I couldn't see or communicate with my partner in the US on a daily basis, or shoot things in the face with her when we play games together, which would leave me having to play single player with a bunch of AI bots that are generally as much use as a chocolate fireguard. Without her, I'd be more lost than I would be without the rig.

b)My health. I'll be the first to admit that my health isn't what it used to be. I used to be able to lift weights without a problem, and kick or punch my punchbag without it being absolutely necessary for me to limber up first. Now, my knees are starting to crack every time I stand up, and they get sore if I'm sat in the same position for too long. I can sometimes come out of a shower feeling out of breath. But despite it seeming pretty bad, I know that there are so many more things that could go wrong. My partner's illness really brings it home to me sometimes just how lucky I am health wise. My hands and legs obey me, I can feel things, and I can work for more than a couple of hours without feeling fatigued and needing to have a nap. Yet I know I still take it for granted at times; like when I'm putting cheese on every burger I eat, and every time I take a drag of a cigarette.

Being able to get up in the morning and not have things blow up in your face. How many people in the world can't say that.

Great post Doc. I think we all take things for granted including loved ones. I have been away from my wife for almost 2 years now. When and if immigration gives her the approval to leave her country I will look her in the eyes, tell her how much I love and missed her and make her always feel like she is never taken for granted.

Omg, everyone has very good points-  Yes, I definitely do take clean water for granted, as well as what Uvah  mentioned about waking up in a warzone every morning as many do overseas.     I really do feel like a spoiled brat and have MUCH to be greatful for.

Thanks DrJBHL, this is a very very good thread!

I think we all take our extremities for granted. I think Doc posted this vid once, and my wife and I have watched all his vids.

I try to take for granted that people will respect all life, that drug lords will realize their sin and stop their actions, that the rich will realize their sin in not helping the deserving poor, that religious beliefs will be respected by all, that people will stop killing other people in the name of their God and beliefs, that we can all learn to get along with one another and live in harmony. The list goes on and on ...

I take way too much for granted don't I?    :pout:

I take for granted that tomorrow will come.  It hasn't let me down so far, and when it does, I'm grateful that I won't be around to experience it.

I used to... until I came very, very close to losing my right leg

Since then things have changed.  It hurts like a bitch most days, but I'm glad I still have it.  Others weren't so lucky.

I do, however, take it for granted I'll hear more political bullshit from Canberra each day.

Trouble is, the parliamentary dipshits down there never fail to deliver. >:(

Freedom.

Now that is something everyone takes for granted.... on two levels.

1: There are those who have greater freedoms than most, and who abuse them for a lack of respect and understanding... which then results in the freedoms of others - usually the weak and the innocent - being taken away.

2: Then there are those who take for granted that they have freedoms they do not, and then set about imposing those 'freedoms' on the rest of the world. It is one thing to be governed by laws of the land that actually protect and benefit the masses, but to be shaped and controlled by selfi-serving politicians, big business and other influential people with personal agendas, well that's another.

Sadly, there's 200 million plus people in the US who are oblivious to the fact that their freedom is merely a state of mind and all else is imagined.  Thing is, people in Australia, the UK, Europe and elsewhere in the Western world are also under the same illusion - that they're free, when comparing themselves to the masses in China and the Middle East, etc - when in actual fact they are restricted by borders and boundaries, political bickering and powerful business leaders who have visions of grandeur and designs of their own....

And then there's religion, and the agenda driven restrictions and controls that has imposed on the people of the world over the centuries.  Talk about evil!

I think John Lennon put it best....

... and then he was assassinated for his beliefs. :'(

Bill Hicks:

“The world is like a ride at an amusement park. It goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it’s very brightly coloured and it’s very loud and it’s fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time and they begin to question, is this real, or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, ‘hey – don’t worry, don’t be afraid, ever, because, this is just a ride...’ And we... kill those people. Ha ha ‘Shut him up. We have a lot invested in this ride. Shut him up. Look at my furrows of worry. Look at my big bank account and my family. This just has to be real.’ It’s just a ride. But we always kill those good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok. Jesus murdered; Martin Luther King murdered; Malcolm X murdered; Gandhi murdered; John Lennon murdered; Reagan.... wounded.”
