Questions about multiplayer

Hello,

So I am considering getting this game, I played a couple of games of it a little over a year ago and really liked the gameplay but didn't have my own copy, but there are some things I wanted to know first:

Is 1v1 played competitively, or is it mostly just team games?

How long does a game usually last?

I mostly SC2 and the competitive 1v1 aspect is really what I play games for, wanted to try out this game for when I get bored of practicing SC2.

There are a number of people who play 1v1 competitively (looking at you THAN0S), but most people prefer to play large 5v5 games.

That said, if you host a 1v1, you WILL find people willing to play.

Competitive 5v5 games can last anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour and a half, but most are decided in an hour or so. Most 1v1 games seem to be decided in around 40 minutes if skill levels are somewhat unequal, but if both sides entrench and are relatively equally skilled (which is somewhat unlikely) it can take hours.

Well most of the main players focus on 5v5s, though from what I understand some 1v1s are still played. Most of the average times are for the 5v5s, but even they are usually finished in an hour or less (as in one side clearly gets the advantage and the rest surrender). The main thing holding 1v1 Sins back is that the default 1v1 random map is really quite bad, there are a fairly large amount of planets per player and the map is often divided into two clear halves, often with only the star and/or pirate base connecting them, and they aren't always of equal sizes. Thus if possible try to persuade your opponent to use a pre-made map or even a map designer map.

That said, it is hoped that the new Expansion to rebellion will improve the multiplayer at least a little or and substantially increase the player counts, so if you are truly on the fence it may be best to wait for that. Of course it is at best months away until release, so the old pros are only going to get better in the meantime and you could be getting a lot of experience that could be used against the fresh meat once Rebellion is released.

Further, I advise that the Devs add custom map sharing to Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion.

I disagree somewhat. I, for one, love Random Small, even though the map often slightly favors one player over the other. I like the relatively large amount of planets per player (8 ish each) and the pirate/star choke-point problem is rare: there's almost always a path between the two players that doesn't have to go through the star or pirate base.

Well I guess you've had better luck with it than I have, but I say a good half the time I play it I get a situation like that. Its certainly not a problem any other random map seems to have.

By the game's labeling system that is a very large map. ;)

Random small can often work out, but it is very prone to draws between two equally skilled players.

I get tired of SC2 by playing it waaay too much heh, at most I sometimes practice 8 hours a day but sometimes I need a break.

I might try this game even if 1v1 isn't the premier gametype, I really like the concept of it.

Or you could try playing realistic small(er) maps against humans if you're looking for an actual challenge...

by challenge u mean the rushers that always come as soon as they have a cap ship?

Sins online multiplayer is awesome, but you should probably be aware that this game has low player counts.  It will look completely dead compared to the SC player counts.  You need to get the Diplomacy expansion (Trinity) and then you can find 4v4 and 5v5 games pretty much every later afternoon and night (North America time).  Do note that you often have to wait for a game; when I say low player counts I mean 30 people on at once.  Still, we do get a couple games going every night.

Seriously?  Aren't there like 100,000 people on the SC2 Battlenet at any one time?

Yeah I don't think a wait that long is possible. I've played at least 4,000 matches total on SC2 and never had a wait time longer than 2 minutes, and even a 2 minute wait is only possible at the very high or low ratings (since not as many people rated near you) and at really off hours.

yeah battle.net is massive, by not possible I meant the long wait time, just wanted to clarify to make sure people weren't thinking I was saying 100,000 is not possible, now that I read it that's what it looks like I meant :X
