Refineries anyone? Should they be deleted?

Refineries anyone? Should they be deleted?

Sure: You can beat the hell out of an Ai with just refineries, culture and extraction upgrades as an economy but on ICO it's a all different thing altogether. Its still a good laugh though..

What is fun is to mine resources and have 1 refinery per planet meaning theres spare logistics for military and more resource extraction research.

Geeze- im so spoilt   !..

AIs definately know how to spoil a man!

You made me press resource focus button for the first time Ai! Mwaa. love u ai! mwaa !    :smitten:

Can someone with more experience shine some light on this topic because at this point I don't see a reason for refineries being in rebellion other than just for amusement..

Refineries are incredibly profitable when built in the right spot, they shouldn't be buffed.  If you are constantly having to buy resources, they are a good investment if the game isn't going to be over in the next half-hour.

I think a tiny nerf to trade is a good idea.  Every trade port after the first in a gravwell should have some diminishing returns so by the time you have built the 8th tradeport at that desert, it is only half as profitable as the first one you built.

That's actually a great idea Cykur. Also realistic--every over saturated market eventually becomes unprofitable.

mixed with keeping refineries the same (maybe a touch cheaper) and with getting the trade chain bonus of trade ports down ... can we increase the heights and lows that the black market will rise and fall too? This might prompt more players to go the refinery route is in a certain game items are beginning to become fairly expensive.

When the game first launched, the black market prices kept going up and up as people bought a resource without selling.  Crystal was usually in high demand;  in some games the price for it would go up past 1000 per 100 crystal (if memory serves?).  The first thing everyone did when a game started was try to purchase 200 crystal because in a 10 player game the last guy to buy his crystal was paying twice as much as the first guy did.

The current black market is set up not to punish people too much if they can't find a specific resource.  Because of the rock / paper / scissors relationship of ship combat, you would be completely screwed if your opponents 8 planet empire has balanced resources and yours was severely lacking in metal or (usually) crystal and you couldn't build the ships you needed.

Ages ago I suggested that there be an option at game setup to disable the black market, or make it a "closed" market where there wouldn't be anything available to buy that had not been sold into it.  The devs did comment on it being interesting, but I'm pretty sure it didn't make it in because they don't want to create situations where people "game" the resource market to win.

Hmm.  I like Boshimi's idea a lot but I also see the wisdom of Cykur's observation (man--did I just use Cykur and wisdom in the same sentence together?).

It would be great if each faction was also a "company" on the stock exchange and succeeding in missions and the like for them raised or lowered their stock value--along with investments and sales.

Not gonna happen but it would be cool.

So I hate too take the cheap way out by just posting a link instead of saying something of worth... But ah well.

So what do people think of what the Enhanced 4X mod did to trade/refineries. opinions on it?

lol mods are the easy way out

I personally prefer a different set of changes, but the Enhanced 4x mod accomplishes its goals quite well and the people who play it enjoy it immensely, which at the end of the day is all that matters...

What is nice about the Enhanced 4x mod is that it's tested fairly frequently in MP games, so independent of how you feel about the changes, there's a fair amount of feedback regarding it...ultimately, the more mods and ideas out there, the better it is for the community...to be honest, I think GoaFan's mod is more memorable for its random events and diplomacy system than its economics, and I wouldn't be surprised if some of his ideas get incorporated into other mods...
