Game lag - single player - help!

Hey everyone, just wanted to get some tips on making sins run better, about 2 hours into my game I am experiencing horrible lag and its making it annoying to play, I just bought the game off steam last night.

I have a fresh install of win7 x64 all drivers up to date.

AMD Phenom IIx6 1075T 3.00ghz

12gig DDR3 running 1333 mhz ganged mode (was running unganged but decided to try out ganged in the game to see if it would fix the issue)

120gig SSD

ATI HD5770 gpu 1ghz (dxdiag says 2797mb total)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. Smaller fleets, smaller systems (amount of planets), less players.

-or-

2. Revert back to a 32 bit system (I found this most helpful).

Sins sadly is a bit bottlenecked in the engine itself. Rebellion is suppose to bring better optimization so you have to keep the game sizes a little small for now. Do remember that this game is a bit old (2006) so it can't really take advantage of the latest hardware nearly as well as newer games (such as 64 bit processing).

Reduced settings too. If you run everything on Highest and have skyboxes on and everything pinned to the empire tree, you reduce lag a lot by bringing settings down to High-Medum, removing skyboxes and features you don't notice/care about, and by unpinning or stacking or minimizing parts of the empire tree.

Have you patched the game? If you are playing on a large map early in the trinity patches pirates would tend to mass units every few minutes and it would cause lag that is most likely your problem.

Thank you very much for the replies, I am running the latest 1.34 patch right now, bit of a shame it lags but the game is great so I am not going to let it bother me too much, I will do as you suggested and turn some things off.

I remember playing it when it first came out and it was awesome, cant remember why I stopped playing......probably work.

I would definitely revert back to 32bit but I have so many programs I run at once for work so I kind of need to utilise the 12 gig spread across the cpu cores.

Anyway cheers for the tips, cant wait for the new version to come out.

Would be rather stupid to change back to 32bit.

Since it would reduce your memory by loads and that wouldnt really be helpfull either.

Reducing your Empire Tree (unpinning everything and only having the very very basic you need in it), will get you the biggest bang for you buck FPS wise end game.

If you want to take it a step farther, mod the trade port/refineries ships spawn rates and spawn counts. And reduce Strikecraft squad down.

How low is up to you, but the less of these ships you have floating around end game the better.

Another thing to mod, is pirate ships. Giving them an ability to self-destruct after X time will help kill any FPS lost by the game tracking those ships.

Space elevators seemed to eat some FPS. Unless your taking pictures or video, Med settings will be great for you viewing pleasure.
