Axe - Weaponry Metal costs

Ok so have just started a new game, got my research up to weaponry (first research I clicked, and stuck with it) and noticed that a basic dagger costs 1 metal, a basic a basic Warhammer (Ok I am playing gilden, so think of it as a... big dull sword) costs 1 metal, and the axe costs 2?... why do the axe costs double the amount of metal of a huge warhammer entirely made of metal??

Warhammers use crude metal. It takes less metal when it is not refined. Axes use more. I can't comment on the balance between the two though, because I honestly only remember not liking it and then changing them both.
