Arriving at My Place Monday

new case & mobo to keep up with the times

http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/Product.aspx?S=1393&ID=2048

 This.....

            arrives at my place Monday.

It's the new Thermaltake Chaser Mk 1... see external link for more info.

The main reason I'm upgrading my case is to have access to 2 front USB3 ports and an eSata port up front as well.  More importantly, however, is the HDD dock on top, allowing me to plug in any SATA drive [HDD, SSD] without power or USB cables... and I do have several drives without cases, so it saves me having to swap drives in and out, etc.

To enable these new features, though, I have to get this....

It gives me the header to connect the external USB3's my current board doesn't, plus it gives me x 8 internal Sata's and x2 eSATA's on the back panel... meaning I could have a total of 11 SATA devices.. not to mention 10 rear USB's and 4 front USB's, so there's plenty of room for expansion should I need it.  Besides, the black mobo will look rather grand in that case, eh?

And to juice this up I'm getting the 8 core AMD FX8170 CPU.  Total cost [case, mobo, CPU]... AUD$540.00

Will post some pics once I've got it all together. :)

I just traded in my Xbox 360 and preordered a Nexus 7.  I feel dirty.   :(O

Not just dirty, you should feel downright disgusting filthy dirty... not that I know what Nexus 7 is, but owning an X-Box 360 is more than enough.

:-" :w00t:

Yeah owning hardware I never use while wanting stuff I would is awesome. It's like...

like...

umm, something.

I also did not know what a nexus 7 is/was, turns out it is one of those phones for dummies that are smarter than the users ie the phone uses the person, NOT the way I prefer ie person uses phone.

Yeah, do you even know what a tablet is?

It's a computer.

Not a phone.

Get a clue.

tablets are made by medicine companies eg aspirin tablets, panadol tablets, antibiotic tablets etc...

computers consist of a computer BOX that has one or more storage devices( eg hdd, odd, tape drive, floppy drive), a keyboard, usually a screen, possibly a mouse and other external peripherals. it does NOT have the keyboard or storage devices

phones have either a separate handset or integrated handset.

and the real killer of your claim is the websites that had it listed it as a PHONE!!!!

these are the clues for you to see what I KNOW. now grow another brain cell so the one you have will not be lonely.

End of harpo99999's quote

No keyboard? Really?

No storage devices?
Just because 'it' doesn't spin up and makes grinding noises when active doesn't mean it hasn't got any storage.

Think outside the 'box'.... What we, 'the elders', see as a computer isn't necessarily the definition of a computer.
Things 'evolve', you know.

10-15 years ago anyone our ages would have said the same about mobile phones... 'That's not a phone. It doesn't have a cord or a dial' ;)

what you show on the screen of your device is a PHONE system NOT a COMPUTER operating system eg unix multix xenix linux windows(95- 7) or (GAGGING) osx, and will even tolerate the claim that dos is a real computer operating system, but that is NOT as it restricts the user to ONE task at a time LIKE DOS did, but without the terminate and stay resident tricks BUT it will NOT update so is a PHONE program NOT an operating system, and just to totally upset you, I do have one of those oversized phones, so DO have an idea what I am talking about, and DO prefer the phones WITH buttons eg nokia & corded.

and I WAS selling mobile phones back in 1986 which is sixteen YEARS ago.

It says phone where now?  I'm kind of lost as to your claim.

http://www.asus.com/Tablet/Nexus/Nexus_7/

Phone...phone...not seeing it anywhere.

Try again.

And yes, it has a keyboard.  You type on the screen for it.  You can also use a bluetooth keyboard and mouse if you like.

and from the PAGES you linked to

'

Simple. Beautiful. Beyond Smart.' theterm smart us ONLY used in movies & tv ie GET SMART and PHONE manufacturers for the buttonless phones to distract the dumb customers from the fact that they do NOT have buttons, and like the socalled smar phones you have to bash the SCREEN to use the device, and WHEN the screen BREAKS you have to get a NEW phone/device as the SCREEN is the only way to use the device.

where as with a real computer you can either add OR replace the keyboard without needing to replace the unit

yeah thats what bluetooth is there for.  You can add or replace a keyboard without attaching anything!  Fancy.

You know what else makes it a non phone?

The fact that there is no cellular connectivity whatsoever.

BUT it will NOT update
End of harpo99999's quote

harpo99999 .... nowhere is there within the definition of an 'Operating System' that it MUST be able to 'update'.

Nor does a machine's proclivity to be updated [or not] define whether it is a phone [or not].

Either you are intentionally attempting to get a 'rise' out of your fellow respondents or are more painfully naive in spite of your insistence that you are not.

It's probably time to just let it rest....;)

BTW.... an abacus is a 'real computer' .....;)

Orright, enough of that and back on topic...

So, here's the beast....

Side view 1... show how good cable management is

Side view 2.

Front view with ROM and soundcard front panel.

Front view in situ... shows how tall best is in comparison to desk.

Side view 3... shows just how high this beast is, next to my sexy legs. :w00t:

Side view 4.... on my desk just prior to closing up, firing up.

All Fired Up and running like a dream.

So, am I happy with my new beast?  You betcha!

But is it any faster?  Some, but not hugely so at the moment.  According to AMD, the higher speeds of the Bulldozer/FX series are supposed to be seen in Win 8, which apparently handles them better than previous OSes.

Oh, the one thing that didn't go according to plan... the fans.  The mob I purchased from sent the wrong size and I have to wait 'til the right size is back in stock.  Oh well, but I'm keeping the ones they sent in error as they will serve me well in other cases.

Bulldozer is disappointing overall, but some games actually like it quite well from what I've seen.

I'm happy with my current system...don't expect to replace it before 2014, but I'd be happy to be proven wrong!

Yeah, he had the measurements down to the  mm cm foot yard. I don't know how they could have been confused. :P

That's one tidy build there,Starkers. Airflow should be exceptional.

I  think the increased transfer speeds of USB 3.0 will be a big plus,  the rigs overall speed increased or not.

Yes, many testers/commenters have deemed the bulldozer rage disappointing, but then others have said it is a nice upgrade to the Phenom II series, power-wise and for its overclockability.  I did read in one review that the 8 core Bulldozers did not even surpass the Phenom II x6 1100T speed-wise, but I can confirm the FX8170 is definitely faster in Win 7, though not enormously, enormously so.  However, AMD states that the series was designed with Win 8 and beyond in mind.

Orright, have your fun while you can... I will ensure [as best as possible] in the future that I will not repeat those typos/lapses of reason.  The difference between millimetres and centimetres has been indelibly stamped into my consciousness by the ridicule heaped upon me in this thread, so after the sleepless nights double checking a metric ruler, I stand a semblance of a chance of getting it right in future.... I hope.

Ah, decided to slip this one in while I wasn't looking, did ya? However, you did comment kindly regarding my tidy build so I'll forgive you, this time.

;P

Yeah, the airflow in the case is fantastic even without the additional fans, which I'm not in an immediate hurry for, being Winter here.  I will want them in time for Summer, though, due to plus 40c temps in these parts.

So, will we see you elsewhere, like when you're doing a televised book signing for your latest dictionary.... in another life or something?

;P

Oh, and the dictionary would include a comprehensive section on weights and measurements, wouldn't it!
