Feature request - corner hotspot to Metro

In the earlier version of Start8 there was an option to have a lower left screen corner icon that would take you directly to the Metro Start page.  I like this new one but it now seems to take two steps:

- click the button

- pick Windows 8 menu from the top of the list

If the earlier method were available, it would be about perfect.

Thanks

I got this to happen by accident, although now I cannot reproduce it!  Through some sequence of trying out all of the options I got the hot corner working as you describe, but then after a reboot it was back to normal!

The current build of Start8 disables the bottom left corner hotspot for the metro startmenu as this tends to interfere with the use of the start button.

Going forward we plan to offer the option to turn on or off each of the corner hotspots.

I hope the metro hot spot comes back too, i liked the previous option to have both start menus on the left

Many thanks for making Start8, it's pretty cool to have both start options, now it's like have 2 OSes on 1

for now you can have metro start by a pin of the shortcut with the "metro" command:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Stardock\Start8\Start8.exe" Metro

A question:

It's there a command to open the Classic start from a shortcut like with metro command?

Got the latest version that under Control has the option for the hot corner start the metro UI but it doesn't work - still opens start8.  Thanks

Here's an idea for a feature that may likely not be possible, but thought I'd ask anyway.  I've noticed that when trying to close a maximized window, if I fling the mouse cursor all the way in the upper right corner and click, nothing happens, because I'm basically clicking on the dead hotspot.  I have to move the mouse pointer out slightly to be able to click on the X to close the window.  Needless to say this is very annoying.  I'm hoping there's a way to make it so that clicking that hotspot zone closes the maximized window, but I understand if that's a limitation that can't be overcome.

I'd like to add my support to this feature request as well! I'm glad to hear it's already being worked on, I just bought the whole suite today and I already love it. Having the metro start menu option in the corner would be sweet!

thanks!

Hi, just adding that I too would love to have the bottom-left hot spot still working to access the metro menu.

Thanks.

+1, me too, for not overriding the behavior of Windows 8 when the mouse is moved to  the lower left corner of the screen, and only display the start8 menus when you click on other parts of the start 8 icon (because that's what we're talking about in this thread right?).

It's more than just accessing the windows8 native start button, also the behavior is messed up when you start in the lower left corner and then move up and down.

You can enable the bottom left hotspot in v1.01 by adding the following registry key :

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Stardock\Start8\Start8.ini\Start8

AllowStartHotCorner = 1

And what about someting like if you go to left hotspot the screen corner icon would appear after x seconds. Like 2 seconds, or 1 and a half. That way it would not interfere with the start button, but would be available to users...

@Neil Banfield

You guys RULE!!

It took two reboots (do you know check for updates in 1.0 does not show 1.0.1?), but the registry trick worked great.

And this exactly what I want.

But now that I have it, I do not understand why you don't make this a option configurable in the GUI, I would imagine many people want this. I thought it might be annoying but now that I have it it is really not in the way at all, since you only have to move the mouse a little from the corner to make start 8 the action again.

For me, start 8 is not so much about staying away from Windows 8 behavior, but more about easing me into it, so that no standard behavior  is overruled is what I am looking for.

Thank you very much for your great product, and especially for this new feature!

Sander.

I downloaded and tried the Start8 app and within five minutes had purchased it! It's pretty much exactly what I want and is an essential app for Windows 8 IMO. The Start screen simply does not offer the same quick functionality as the Start menu IMO, no matter how many keyboard shortcuts you learn. I've set mine up so the Windows key switches between the Modern UI and the desktop.

There are a few minor blemishes though that stop Start8 from being perfect:

1. The Games option in the Start menu, which I have set to display as a menu rather than a link, takes a long time (20 seconds or so) to display all my games compared with Windows 7, which was pretty much instant (presumably due to caching?). I have a lot of games in there though, around 90 or so, possibly over 100 (I've never bothered counting!).

2. Windows 8 by default has a little space on the left of the taskbar, similar to the right-hand side which allows you to see the desktop or peek at it. This space to the left between the edge of the screen and the first Quickbar icon allows you to switch to the Start screen when you hover there and left-click, or bring up the a mini-menu when you right-click on the mouse buttons (I believe this might be called a hot corner). This is missing when Start8 is active as the Start button extends right to the left most edge of the screen, which is a shame as I don't see why this space was removed. Even by default, while I was learning the ropes with Windows 8, I kept inadvertently clicking on the Internet Explorer icon by mistake when I wanted the Modern UI Start screen until I adjusted. The Start button could easily be where the Internet Explorer icon is and still have the small space for accessing/peeking at the Modern UI Start screen IMO.

If it was still there then you could have both the Start screen and hot corners working. Which brings me onto...

3. ... the top-left hot corner which doesn't work with Start8. That means I cannot hover to switch to the Start menu or switch to any Modern UI apps that might be running by moving down and hovering until the left side panel pops out showing all the apps running.

I might email Stardock and see if these can be incorporated into a later build but for now this app is very handy and I feel less like I have one hand tied behide my back when I'm using Windows 8. I do like certain aspects of the Modern UI Start screen and even choose to boot to it but having access to everything Windows 8 has to offer, including all the hot corners, as well as the Start menu is my ideal preference.

In an earlier version, the bottom left corner of the screen right click [Windows 8] menu didn't work real well.

But it is working well for me now. So, I hope that doesn't get messed with. It is an important Windows 8 feature not to be messed with.

Well, that's a start! Thank you very much! :)

Is there any way to enable to the top-left hot corner as that is perhaps a more useful alternative that is less likely to interfere with the Start button/menu at the bottom and gives access to the task switching panel that allows you to go from one Modern UI app to another? I'm kind of missing that to be honest, granted I can still use it from the Modern UI Start screen simply by hitting the Windows key to switch to it.

You can enable the top left hot corner. It's a configuration of start8.

I must have missed the option then as when I tried it this morning, admittedly very briefly as I had to leave for work, it was definitely not working and when I looked in the Start8 Configuration I couldn't see anything there to enable it (all the disabled hot corners options were unchecked and actually greyed out, in fact). I've obviously missed something so I'll take another look later on. Thanks for the info.
