No music

I have the same thing happen more often than not. I just assume it's my computer since it is on the low end (PIII-600MHz, 128MB RAM).

Try going into the music or event music folders ingame and playing the mp3s there. If that works then.. uh... hmm I just ran out of inspiration ;D. But try it anyway and post the results.

they play fine from the folder....its during the game that i dont get any music...i do have the sound effects, but no in-game music...i get music during the intro, but nothing when the game is playing altho i do get the loud music when im talking with the Dregins.
let me ask this too....maybe i just missed it but there is music playing in the background when you are moving your ships, correct? At least i though there was, but it has disappeared after the last update from StarDock

I only get music when I'm in the diplomacy part of the game. All other times, the game is quiet. Doesn't bother me though and I'm sure it's due to my low-end system.

Be sure that the custom playlist option is not checked on in the options screen. If it is thats your problem, as the game is trying to play your own music.
This exact thing happened to me, and turning this off started the normal music instantly. Hope this helps, its a little lonely with no sound (:(

Do you hear sound effects when you click on things? Do you hear music/sounds in the cutscenes? If not, check your debug.err file for directsound errors. 

Otherwise, it may be a problem with your mp3 codecs.  WinDVD sometimes causes problems with the mp3 player.  WinAMP3 can cause crashes because of its buggy mp3 codecs.

If none of the suggestions in the replies have helped, e-mail me your debug.err file, your prefs.ini file, and a dxdiag report.

I frequently find that the music will stop playing for no apparent reason in the main game. However, sound effects keep working, and I can just pull up a diplomacy screen with a major, and their theme plays. Then when I leave the diplomacy screen, the regular in-game music returns.
